Springleaf

Pat Springleaf is in quite the bind. He’s an ex-conman turned undercover cop in the middle of the biggest case of his career - the gang are getting suspicious, his wife wants a divorce, the police are demanding results and his ex girlfriend/ex partner in crime is blackmailing him. Not an ideal situation for someone with a burning need to please absolutely everybody...

A new sort-of-true-crime comedy series from James Acaster (Off Menu, Repertoire, Ghostbusters), featuring Bill Bailey, Chloe Petts, Domhnall Gleeson, Evelyn Mok, Finn Wolfhard, Freya Parker, Hugh Dennis, Jack De'ath, Jason Forbes, Jo Brand, Kath Hughes, Kemah Bob, Louis Theroux, Mark Silcox, Michael McKean, Mike Wozniak, Miles Jupp, Milton Jones, Natalie Cassidy, Nathaniel Metcalfe, Nish Kumar, Pat Cahill, Phil Dunning, Phil Wang, Sarah Millican, Sharon D Clarke and Sindhu Vee, with guests Ed Gamble, Romesh Ranganathan, Tom Allen, Katherine Ryan, Lolly Adefope, Josh Widdicombe, Joe Lycett, Sara Pascoe, Rosie Jones and Guz Khan.

    Can’t recommend it
Love Acaster’s comedy but this isn’t really worth your time. Better off listening to Off Menu or watching his fantastic standup. Great performances from Romesh Ranganathan, Hugh Dennis, and Louis Theroux though.
  • Im sorry I'll shutup
    Hilarious
    10/10 would listen

    Cute premise
This is a cute premise but it’s not as good as Acaster’s original standup but as Springleaf. The casting seems like he called in favors from friends, but some of the voice acting seems stilted. Other regulars are a little mush-mouthed and wouldn’t have made it past professional casting. The studio guest thing is over the top and distracting. TL;DR: this would be better with professional producers forcing edits, not as a passion project.

I'd rather listen to paint drying
Interesting premise. Not funny. Bad improv(?) by the guests. Kemah Bob has a voice for silent podcasts. You could insert nails on a chalkboard for her parts, and it would be less grating, and funnier. An important feature for an audio format.

    I just don’t get it
I’ve liked pretty much everything Acaster does. Fifteen minutes into episode one - I just don’t understand it - I cant find the humor anywhere

    Another Masterpiece
Why is everything James Acaster works on so brilliant? Why must he be so charming and funny? You have officially ruined all other men for me, Acaster. I will one day die old and alone, probably with the name “Springleaf” carved into my childhood sled.

    Vomit
This was a 5 until they did a bit where James kept vomiting into the mic.

    Such fun
Springleaf is an unusual premise that manages to be silly without being sophomoric. I can’t imagine another podcast that could put together such a talented group of actors. I look forward to each episode.

    Springleaf doesn’t miss
Springleaf had me fooled that he was a stand up comedian but now that I know the truth he’s the only cop I like and I’ll be damned if he wasn’t the best cop there is

    Absolutely Hilarious
This podcast is so unwaveringly silly, it is delightful. The teleplay that unfolds over audio is an absurdist dream. Serpico the merdog is the true star of the show. 👍🏼 Imaginative, enjoyable, and laugh out loud funny.

    Wonderful Nonsense
For such a fun, ridiculous podcast the plotlines and jokes are surprisingly well thought out. James Acaster is in top form, laying framework that makes you giggle and then throwing in the call backs that leave you belly laughing. It’s just incredibly enjoyable storytelling and reminds me of the old timey radio dramas my dad used to listen to, but for my generation.

    Hilarious
Love this podcast! It has everything. True crime, the rise and falls of a comedy career, marriage drama, and great comedy. Enjoyed every episode so far.

Fantastic podcast, and if you’re a fan of James’s standup you’ll love how they turn the Springleaf character into a full narrative. He’s amazing and what a cast!

Very funny podcast , I was a kickstarter backer so I’ve been waiting for a while for this show, and it was worth the wait.

    Just Fun
It’s genuinely smart, with layered jokes, references, and callbacks. It’s also well crafted and original. But what makes it a great listen is that it’s just silly and fun. You can tell the people involved are enjoying themselves and it’s nice to just have a laugh with them.

    Entertainment for your ears
James Acaster is one of the funnies MFers around. Springleaf is hilarious, silly and ridiculously entertaining. I’m invested every week and always want to know what’s going to happen next. 10/10 recommend.

    Acaster’s One of a Kind
One of the most unique shows out there. Wildly entertaining and fun. Very clever.

    My current obsession
I’ve been waiting for this show to come out for ages and was not disappointed! So inventive and funny in a less conventional way than most comedians on podcasts right now. Really sets Acaster apart as a unique voice whilst also turning the cop drama form on its head in the best way. Brilliant.

Listened for Domhnall, stayed for the laughs
Love how nonsensical this is with a brilliant voice cast. If you’re not silly, this isn’t for you.

    springleaf bebè
I’ve missed springleaf since repertoire. So glad we get more of him! The studio guests are perfect, and as always acaster creates a weird, endlessly enjoyable universe instead of a series of punchlines.

Haven’t laughed once in the first 2 episodes
Listened to the first two episodes and didn’t really understand the plot line or humor. I love James Acaster’s standup and other podcasts. I actually backed Springleaf, so I’m a little disappointed so far. It seems that most of that money went to roping in other celebrity comedians. I’m hoping the plot will make more sense as new episodes are released.

    Acaster is a National Treasure
Another winner by James Acaster…seriously, this guy is brilliant and funny. Well done to all involved…and Ed’s cameo is great.

    Amazing
This show is exactly as hilarious as the star-studded cast would lead you to believe it would be. Some of Acaster’s best work, which is definitely saying something. 10/10 would recommend!
