The Catch

Small pelagic fish have been sustaining the communities of the Gambia and Senegal for centuries. But recently, foreign fleets have taken interest. China in particular has been processing large quantities of fish from the region into a product called fishmeal, to support animal feed and fish farms abroad. And as the fishmeal industry has grown, local communities’ food security has suffered, pushing many to migrate abroad. On season five of The Catch, host Ruxandra Guidi reports from the Gambia and Senegal to hear firsthand how the fishmeal plants are impacting these communities and whether the industry, which underpins much of aquaculture, can be turned sustainable for all.

I absolutely LOVE this podcast, I love learning about the marine life and about how others see the problems of fish and the ocean itself. I listen to this at home, school, and when I’m traveling, it’s entertaining and informative. So I highly recommend listening to this for all ages! 😄

    Great investigative work and storytelling
Great investigative work and storytelling on an important topic. I love the primary source interviews of different stakeholders, review of relevant history and current events and insights on interconnections between the ecosystem and human activities. Have relistened to it all three times and am looking forward to more seasons hopefully.

    Human Population
Is there any surprise to any of this? The problem is simply human overpopulation.

    Alaskan fisherman
Funny- our pacific cod here around alaska are more abundant than ever, and we live close to Russia. Where we fish, cod are spiking while other fisheries are declining. Nature has this funny way of balancing itself out. Wow, if the supposed war is impacting this fishery, I wonder how many animal species declined or just went extinct, say during WWI, WWII, Vietnam war, Iraq, and so on….
