Death on the Lot

We’re getting into 1950s Hollywood, ground zero for a cultural transformation that would upend every aspect of Americans’ lives. A movie theater in every city, a TV in every living room, and a Post-war America determined to be happy at any cost. Also during this period… a slew of untimely Hollywood deaths. The rules of the road for the next seventy years were being written in real-time, and not everyone would make it out alive. This is the story of how Hollywood sold us on a new American Dream, and left a few unlucky stars holding the bag.Hosted by Adam McKay (The Big Short, Vice, Succession).Death on the Lot is part of The Binge - subscribe to listen to all episodes, all at once, ad-free right now. Waste of a good story
Note to Adam McKay: Most of us don’t share your liberal views. Your attempts at humor were really bad.

A good podcast disfigured by stupid humor
This should have been a four-star review, but the host’s extended, unrelenting geezer jokes are an agony of embarrassment to listen to. Mr. McKay, you are not nearly as funny as you think you are. Your mediocre and self-absorbed attempts at humor are a waste of my time. It’s a sad thing, because you’ve put together an interesting and informative podcast. It is a bit too narration- heavy, and if you had sliced out all inane humor, that would have given more space for other voices and afforded the listener some relief.

    Would’ve been great
If it weren’t for the liberal drivel..omg the narrator is such a liberal hack!! Made it though the 3rd episode and had to listen to another podcast

    Adam McKay!
Great storytelling and engaging personality drew me in to this sharply observed and well-reported collection of essays on Hollywood’s darker history. I’m really sorry to be out of episodes. Let’s hope Mr McKay has more to tell us! I’ll be listening.

    Happy to be Here
I just found this podcast while looking for podcasts on the Golden Age of Hollywood. I love classic films and learning more about the celebrities of the time. This podcast is well researched and entertaining. The narrator reminds me a bit of James Ellroy, which is cool.

Great content but you need to hire a professional narrator. Unlistenable

    Hollywood History with a Twist
Loved the blend of classic Hollywood dark history with an Adam McKay lens. I only wish there were a season 3 quickly arriving. Smart, funny, and surprising.

    Great job.
Enjoying the podcast but fyi Hollywood Forever Cemetery is located on Santa Monica Blvd, not on Melrose.

Lacks focus and a better narrator
Adam McKay should have let someone else narrate this.

    Death on the lot
A great listen with a lot of unique info about the topic that’s being discussed. Loved hearing the break down of each episode so far in season two.

Revisionist history to fit a narrative
The first episode alone.. here fact. The 1964 Civil Rights Act: 80% of Republicans in the House and Senate voted for the bill. Less than 70% of Democrats did. You’re part of the machine to manipulate Americans. regardless of party.

    My New Favorite
This second season, Death on the Lot, is just fantastic. So well produced, and it ties together so much of American culture in both a funny and informative way.

    Soo good!
I’m not a huge basketball fan but absolutely loved this podcast! Incredibly interesting and relevant to today’s athletes.

    Doc style was terrific !
Great interweaving of politics, culture, social justice issues and sports history. Excellent research and loved the BBC format, kept it super interesting to someone who isn’t a huge follower of the NBA, but loves sports history! How about doing something on the History of womens pro bb, and how that intertwines with gender, race, politics and capitalism? Can look at the ABL that was started by the players and an ex Olympian pre WNBA, leading into the Griner situation now and the need for women pro players to play abroad! Overall I highly recommend this podcast.

    Outstanding !
A must for any hoops fan. I was a junior in college when Len Bias died. Went to basketball camp with Keith Gatlin, Bias’ PG at Maryland. It as like the world stopped. Ben Wilson’s death was also a shocker. Well researched and high production value. I hope there are plans for more episodes. Also, please consider doing something on college basketball. Lots of stories to be told and a lot of dirt to be dished. I applaud your excellent work! Keep it coming so I don’t have to cancel my subscription! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿

    Great podcast
I’m not a huge basketball fan perhaps because I’m a 72 year old grandma but I’m loving this. Mr. McKay is an outstanding host and the stories are so interesting. Love it!

A great thread through history, sports, politics and social issues
This is a well done podcast. Content and production are top-notch. McKay pulls together some complex topics to weave tight storytelling.

    Is this a Sports Podcast?
Was expecting a Sports Podcast and but underneath that veneer it seems to just be a middle finger to Reagan and conservatives.

    Ray-gan not reg-en
Good but it’s like nails on a chalkboard hearing president Reagan’s name pronounced reg-en
  • @cesargonz
    Excellent show
The crossroads between 80s politics and 80s ball and how the effects are felt today. Plus the amazing secret history of George Mikan. U don’t have to be a basketball fan to enjoy this engrossing series.
  • AlliKat777
Fascinating, even for a non-sports fan
I came across this podcast by accident and it’s not something that I would usually choose to listen to because I am very much not a sports fan, but I ended up loving it! Each story was engagingly told both on the micro and the macro level. I highly recommend it to fans of history and news/politics style podcasts.

    MOAR
Give me MOAR!!! At first I didn’t think I’d care about these basketball players I’d never heard of but now I just want to learn more about them and others. I’m not even a big podcast person let alone someone who writes reviews. So please take my advice. If you like the topics of: any era of the NBA, mental health, politics, gun control, racism, international relations, hip hop, then listen to this podcast.
  • Darkextract
    Speechless
This podcast is so hard too listen to, without me crying the whole way through. I’m so sad while listening but know I need to continue. I’m so ashamed of us as human beings, and I know it’s not everybody, but a little is too much. I’m just praying for our world to do better.

    Woke garbage
Get out of here with this leftist drivel. Pizz off.

Good mix of history and sports
Love the historical, cultural, and sports and how it interrelates but I would love to hear more about the athletes. Maybe interviews with their families or more about them. I get a short glimpse of the athlete and more about the Reagan era. And while I see how it connects more on the athletes in the next season please!

    Time Well Spent!
This podcast was engrossing and informative, what a great podcast. I love the intersection of politics and culture. People want to believe that politics, culture and sports exist in individual silos but they don’t. I’m just a few years older than Len Bias, I remember when he died but didn’t know the backstory. I really liked episode 7 about the players that got blackballed for speaking out. I am a super fan of Adam and his team. BRAVO!!
  • aroggggg86Dec
    One of the best
Great, imaginative premise combined with perfect music, storytelling, vibe, and sound quality. Adam McKay is a good narrator and I love how his takes on politics don’t paint one side as evil and the other divine-just two sides of the same coin that must be reckoned with.
  • Sean6-26
    Meh at best
Some of the basketball-focused segments are great but the whole thing is heavily politically slanted. No one has personal choice. Everything is the fault of white Republicans. Even stuff passed by Democrats is somehow the fault of (or made worse by) Republicans. I made it 4 episodes in and had to bail. I think both political parties are terrible but just focusing on the poor policies of one while giving the other a pass is ridiculous.

    Not a super fan
At the end of the last episode we hear the speaker say if you are still listening you must be a super fan. I am not a super man by any means however this was one of the best sports themed presentation I’ve heard or watched. A marvelous perspective on sports history politics and life.

    Connecting Historical Dots
The way in which Adam McKay thoughtfully and intelligently connects the historical and political dots around race, industry and individual superstars whose stories have been overlooked, forgotten or misrepresented is riveting. The lens of our host taking his own second look at the cultural forces that drove his love of the NBA is a model for all to engage in our own versions of revisionist reflection. So well done.
  • dham2001
    What a shame
Every episode worse than the previous one. Turned into Democrat propaganda. Shameful.
