Games #148

One Shot is a podcast about role playing games. Every month, host and Game Master Dillin Apelyan leads a group of players on a self-contained adventure. Every adventure will be wrapped up in 4-5 episodes in time for a new story, in a new system, with new players the following month. One Shot will explore every RP system possible to give listeners a sampling of the possibilities in the wide, world of roleplaying.

The podcast feels very home-y! Like I’m sitting at the table with the players.

    Reviewing a little too late
I wish I had reviewed this show sooner so it could be five stars. But since Dillin took over, I haven't liked it as much. The groups are more chaotic and rambunctious, the audio quality is poorer, and it feels like very little gets done in each episode. And I know it's unfair to compare DIllin to James, but he's just not as good. His NPCs are thin, and have maybe two or three voices. One Shot has always been good for "if you don't like this game and group, wait and check out the next one." But since Dillin took over I've only finished one series, and even that one was close because the other performer had an annoying... catch phrase, I guess? I'm hoping it gets better as Dillin continues to find their footing, but I'm leaving this review now while it's still a 3 star show for me just in case.

    More Dillin!
Can’t wait to hear what new games Dillin brings to a show I already love so much. Didn’t know I could love it more!!

One Shot’s New Host is EXCELLENT
One Shot is a pillar of the actual play community and the new host, Superdillin, is breathing new life into this already excellent show. If you’ve listened to One Shot before, you’re going to LOVE everything Dillin is doing. If you’ve never listened, now might just be the time to start. The easiest five-star rating I’ve ever given.

    Not Scott
I just discovered this and really like it but have to remind myself constantly that the host is not Scott Auckerman… Is there such a thing as a voice doppelgänger?

    Hit and miss
I really enjoy some of these One Shots, but others are super meh. It is HIGHLY dependent on who the players are. The GM is great tho. I will say that I would seriously listen to an ENTIRE campaign with the very first group on the first episodes. I wish there was a whole campaign with them. I really like the funny episodes. Also how have you never had on the Dungeons and Daddies crew?!

    I’m not sure anymore...
This used to my favorite podcast. Politics aside, he always featured lots of neat indies games and designers and the group had good chemistry. I love discovering games and types of gameplay from unknown and unheard of designers. I just reached the start of 2019, and now we are excluding designers based on their sexuality. And he really thinks that’s a good thing. Bigotry is bigotry is bigotry. I appreciate his spirit, and I am just disappointed in the execution.

    Sophomoric
This is sophomoric and the tone is condescending, with lots of self-promoting navel-gazing. Worst of all, it’s just boring.
  • Nael Simmerhorn
James is rather bigoted, but this is a great show despite!
The Nights Black Agents two shot is especially great!

    Expand your world
I have been listening for years. James and his guest will introduce you to new games and entertaining stories/ worlds. I’ve personally went on to buy and play multiple games highlighted by these episodes.

    Good and bad
There are some real gems here and I love that they explore multiple games. The extremist politics are a huge detractor.

    Awesome
I have had so much fun listening to your podcast! I am completely new to this form of storytelling. I am not a gamer or a d and d fan, just an avid reader who is a big fan of Rothfuss and the kingkiller cronicles. Also very impressed by both your fundraising efforts! Really like this community of people and will have to delve farther!

    Always great fun
These guys are always great fun, and I partially credit them with getting this one-time 90s kid gamer back into gaming after 20 years. I swear they even somewhat affected my play-style, in a good way I think. Update 2020: Of course they’ve supported a crusade or 2 to ban some classic ad&d books with their buds at Asians Represent this year, via Twitter. While this shouldn’t be used to judge their show, I have to think that such an extreme ideology must affect their comedy these days, and not in a good way. Still, I can definitely vouch for their earlier stuff.

    Great variety and quality
James is a very experienced GM who knows how to lead a narrative. Appreciate the work the show does to bring in diverse voices.

An Awesome Mix of Many Things
I was recommended this show a few months ago (and I’ve loved it since). It’s a really great to see how many different games and stories play and if there’s ever an episode or setting you can’t get into its new next week. Always changing. Always fun.

    Unlike anything else
Oneshot/Campaign inspired me to get into ttrpgs, which is now one of the biggest joys in my life! The format and work of this show are totally unique and they do so much to introduce games to people in an understandable and enjoyable way. You don't need to know anything about tabletop games to listen - if you like stories at all you'll love this podcast!

    One Shot Hit or Miss
One Shot is one of those podcasts that are hit-or-miss not due to the host or subject matter but the guests. When all the stars align this podcast is funny, charming, and offers a great pseudo-review of the game they are playing. Other times the guests are just not the types who can shoulder the burden of keeping the show entertaining, which is more and more common with newer episodes. Would recommend for the first 200 or so at least!

    Awesome Podcast
One Shot is in turns hilarious, tense, and heart-wrenching, all while being accessible to new listeners because its format means you don’t need to start all the way at episode one. This podcast truly captures the magic of table top gaming.
  • ballistic weasel
    Yeah this is enjoyable.
This podcast is not like any other real play podcast. You’ll never get bored of a storyline because they have a new one every 3 or so episodes, and they switch up the players as well, so you are on an infinite sidewalk, but it looks like someone redid it in a different style every 30 feet. Good fun.

    Mind Blown!!
I’ve loved listening to One Shot for a bunch of years now. All of the episodes are fantastically woven and should be given a listen to. Today, was the day I needed to write a MUST LISTEN, to the Casket Land episodes. When I saw Casket Land on kickstarter, I knew I needed to back it, so that more people could get a chance at seeing how great this RPG is. I was so excited to see that James thought the same, and has picked it up to play on his show. This means even more people will get a chance to listen to what this game can bring to the table. With James at the helm of this narrative, we will be in for a great ride.

    Got me back into rpgs
To thought I just didn't like them because all people around me knew was D&D, (not that there's anything wrong with that, I just got bored with the theme.) So glad I gave this podcast a listen before leaving tabletop rpgs completely.
  • Brian Peace
    My favorite RPG podcast.
I have listened to a great many board game and RPG podcasts. I was looking for an “actual play” podcast for Torg Eternity, and I found this show. Those episodes were fun, so I figured I would see what else they had. I have been interested in Kids on Bikes for a while now, so I decided to listen to the five episodes of that game as well. I am so glad I did. The game was entertaining, the players gelled quite well, and the characters were all so endearing. I have never enjoyed a game podcast more. The cast and GM take the story seriously, but not too seriously. They dip their toes into silliness, but don’t dive in. They strike a nice balance between the two poles, and it is refreshing to listen to. I am just starting the fourth episode and am dreading the end of this five-parter. I would dearly love to follow Mr. Bailey, Brody, Cody, and Hank on many more adventures. Alas, all good things must fall to nostalgia. I’m heartened by the possibility of more great games from this podcast going forward.

    Thoughtful and Exciting
Wonderful storytelling with excellent cast members and an incredibly hardworking and talented host. You never know what you’re gonna get but you can always expect a bumpy ride.

There are TOO MANY AP podcasts
That being said, it is a real treat for me finding a podcast that does the AP thing in style. The frequent change of system allows for exploration and keeps my ADD from getting bored. The majority of the revolving cast surely must have background in and love of Improv &/or Theater. As with Improv, there is a propensity to be outrageous or funny, but the players also truly develop characters and make choices on that basis. Lastly, I love the "call to action" segment. It is an often overlooked fact that because gamers live on the fringe of "normal" many of us are also activist, punks, weirdos, etc. The fact that James introduces and speaks many causes is a really nice, unexpected (frankly unwarranted) addition that is not onbtrusive, but is often informative and helpful. Cheers, One Shot, for doing this thing RIGHT

    Discover Something New.
This is a great show for discovering smaller and interesting new games! James and the various other hosts are great at getting into these games and showing how much fun they can be!
  • Unique Exemplar
    All the games!
I'm so happy there's a podcast out there that showcases so many different games. I originally started listening so that I could decide if I want to buy/start playing a specific game. Now I listen for the hilarity and to hear of new games.

Best Actual Play Podcast out there- hands down
This podcast is incredible! The cast of talent improvisers, variety of gaming systems (including indie systems), new episodes on a reliable schedule, and charming host makes this show my go to gaming podcast. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found myself laughing out loud at funny moments in the adventures. You should especially listen to the Numenera episodes and for something more serious, the L5R episodes.

The Best Actual Play Out There
Listen, I love D&D. However, let's be honest, there are enough D&D podcasts. Furthermore, a lot of them end up sounding very, very similar. On the other hand, One Shot is different with every single adventure, showcases a variety of playstyles and, best of all, showcases a bunch of really cool systems, most of which you probably don't know. If you want to become a better player, GM, improviser, or just more knowledgable about the world of tabletop roleplaying games, One Shot is for you! P.S. My group played Everyone Is John because of this show, and now my life is 63% better.
  • FairmanRogers
    Gold Standard of Actual Play
I only have so much space in my listening schedule for actual plays, but One Shot has never left the rotation. Between the variety of games and the professionalism of everyone involved, I never have to wonder whether the next series is going to be worth listening to - it always is.

    I like this show
It’s fun, I learn about games, it makes me laugh.

    Binging this is recommended
Fantastic. I only just started but the few systems I’ve already listened to have been incredible. James has so far made me want to play or gm all the systems they’ve tried. The guests and other players are generally hilarious. Again, I’ve barely scratched the surface of this podcast but I’m so excited for the hundred or so episodes I still have to listen to.

    Loving the escapism
As a writer and wannabe role player who isn’t great at improv, listening to talented players on a show like this is awesome. Listening to this show on my daily commute is incredibly enjoyable because of the comedy and fantastical stories that take me away for a while. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to roleplay more, and that’s another reason I love this show. I’ve found systems I like other than DnD thanks to this show, and James inspires me to try GM-ing! Thank you to the makers of OneShot for an awesome, hilarious show.
  • Sarikvaster
Best look at the world of rpgs
James is an incredible GM and a great host. The games are often comedic and goofy, but there are several that are serious and dramatic. Since most systems only last for 2-5 episodes, it’s easy to get a feel for the plethora of different games there are out there. While peoples mileage may vary for people playing at home (as most likely won’t be playing with professional comedians/improvers) the show does give you an idea of the way the games are played and is an excellent resource for figuring out what games you’d want to look into owning/playing. This podcast got be me back into gaming and I couldn’t be happier to have found it.

    A Powerful Force
This podcast is amazing. James assembles great groups and great games, highlighting marginalized creators and gamers. Also, kissing (sometimes)!

    Understand what you’re listening to
I have been listening to this since the first episodes- the crazy partiers. This is definitely falls on the less serious side story wise and player wise for the most of the podcast which is ok some of the time (and really depends on what your looking for). But other times and more towards the recent episodes, it loses some of the quality with excessive side conversations (albeit it’s mostly the first 15 to 20 mins of each episode) and too light hearted stories that are developed by players. For me and probably most long time listeners, the expectation would have been that there would have been something more. For example, it would have narrowed down to just a smooth feed of the play that gave us the chance to hear more of the game and less of the talking which could be reserved for another podcast or separate episode (and it would of tended towards more dramatic than not). On another point, the sound quality of the voices is good. But with the growing listenership and support, I thought that James would have more in terms of production value through accents like backdrop music and sound effects. Maybe this is what he wants - as his skyjack campaign walks that fine line between drama and comedy with good interjections that definitely shows effort and adds to production. My hope is that James won’t let the mainstay of his network and the community devolve into just another podcast that is messing around on mikes. The concept of this podcast is phenomenal and gives opportunity throughout the community to show off incredible lesser known games. If you’re reading James, I am just trying to offer what I think to help not to be mean. I like what you’ve done and I applaud you on making it this far. I will change my review when I see things change as I only want to be honest with someone whose given so much of their life to creating an amazing podcast. (Last thing, It’s probably easier to keep having the same friends come on like Liz Anderson- she’s funny- but I miss the cross promoting like with Rob from Orpheus protocol and Quin for Swallows of the South).

    Great show! So much entertainment!
First all, James is an amazing, creative person and I absolutely love when he runs shows. I don’t have all the time in the world I only listen to a couple podcasts and this is one of them. So much entertainment and it’s always exciting and new! Recommended!

    Trending political and losing mojo
This podcast (I am currently circa 205) is getting more and more political and, in the process, is losing its mojo. In particular, Mr. D'Amato feels it important to set up a straw man argument at the end of every episode in a call to action AND in the process, generally demonstrates his lack of understanding. There are better adventuring podcasts and I imagine that I will probably turn this one off in the near future.
  • nicknames are not for me
    Sooooo good.
Great stories and a fun way to check out various RPGs.

My eyes have been forever opened.
After a few episodes of One Shot, I feel like a new person. I have started binging only a couple months ago, but I am wowed by the sheer number of different RPGs that I never knew existed. James is a fantastic DM, who has taught me (a very new DM) great ways to improv my games. All other players and guests have been phenomenal. Whether it’s Star Wars, Dread, or All outta Bubblegum, I will always continue to listen to the wacky and zany episodes that come my way. As a side note, I would want to play one game with these incredible people. Just sayin.

    Great Show
Normally when I'm listening to podcasts, I'm doing other things, cooking, cleaning, etc. With this show, there have been MANY times where I have stopped what I was doing to just listen. Well crafted show, and has a game for everyone.

    How did Flower leave Foon?
I can't believe you guys got Flower out of Foon to come play a magical girl in Of Drow Origin. If you have discovered magic powerful enough to get Flower out of Foon then why didn't you share it with Arnie?
