    Thank you Paul
Paul I have been a podcast listener from way back like around 2010 or something. Love to listen while I drive or ride. I have only now started to try my hand at growing (2021). Been working on planting as many different fruit and nut trees on my property as I can. Up to 20 trees with two of everything (on 1.02 acres in Louisiana). Keep going with everything you are doing because some of us are slow to follow your lead but we are out here trying.

Essential listening to any permaculturist or just looking for awesome inspiration
Paul’s podcast may appear a little esoteric. That’s because he’s talking about a subject he’s passionate about - permaculture. Permaculture is also a hard subject to get your head around. The fasts way to get that knowledge is listening to these podcasts and heading over to his website, which is what I did. It wont be long before they begin to make so much sense as your head fills with the awesomeness.

This podcast is only for cool people :-)
Paul Wheaton is not for everybody, and that’s OK. For one, the dude curses. A fair amount. (There’s a reason it’s marked “explicit.”) Next the things he proposes are pretty far from the mainstream. Probably past your comfort level. I like listening to this podcast because it’s about building a better world through learning new things, instead of being angry at bad guys. Lord knows there’s enough to be angry about. Spend some time pondering alternatives.

    Truly relevant permaculture
Having met Paul in person and spent 2 weeks at Wheaton Labs in 2019, I understand that Paul is truly a character and not for everyone. (Who is? Jesus had His haters too!) That being said, his experience and passion about making a better world and experimenting with making life better for those who want that, comes across. Paul has an amazing group of core folks that have found him and agree with his vision. I do find some episodes more of personal interest than others, of course... roundwood structures, working with animals, and community, but when I occasionally find episodes that don’t appeal to me on subject matter I have found the pause and skip buttons DO work. I’m not looking for a podcast that just confirms my biases or regurgitates stuff the dinosaur media tells me. I like the out of the box thinking these guys do. I miss my time at the Lab also... thanks Paul for being you, even with the expressive words you use! ;-) This podcast and the permies site have inspired me to the point that I’ve travelled far in two years, and have as a goal buying rural land in the next year, and just maybe working to become Wheaton Labs (MO department) or something like that... community, more natural systems, loving the land and working to improve living conditions for myself and others.

    Lost interest.
Sadly Paul has a potty mouth and he lacks the ability to form words without cussing. There’s a lot of other promo culture podcast out there that are a greater value to me.

So much to offer if Paul could just stop talking so much about himself!
I love the Permies website and so many of your podcasts. I am so grateful for everything you do and put out in the world. But I tried just now to listen to the newest podcast - your discussion about the movie “gather.” But Paul you don’t let anybody else talk. I listened to up until the 10 minute mark but couldn’t take anymore after that and stopped. Very creative, productive, talented and visionary people like Paul have much to offer the world but there’s also a bit too much “me, me, me” in there. Paul’s need for everything to focus on him is overwhelming sometimes even from thousands of miles away! I hope the people who are out there in Montana with you can help you do some editing and direct the conversation into the place I feel you really wanted to go anyway. You have so much to offer the entire world -information insights insights we really need - so please just tone down the ego a little bit!

    The Legend Speaks
Thanks, Paul, for being a pioneer and leader in the journey of experimentation. We may not have it all together, but together we can have it all!

    Nate Hale’s Review
I love getting to be a fly on the wall as I listen to conversations about life at Wheaton Labs and how everything is evolving. I hope I can visit one day! I do wish there was a little more teaching concepts of design than updates, but that’s just a selfish want. You still can infer information between the cracks of the stories and still learn a lot for listening in. But I guess that’s what Permies.com and the forums are for!
  • TeddysReady
Good conversational info if you are into Paul and Permaculture
Paul has a lot of great ideas. He can be polarizing but he always make you think. He has many new ideas. Good stuff

    Some Truly Great Stuff Here
UPDATE - for a while now most of the episodes have been all about their mission and not about home scale permaculture or, most importantly, building soil and growing plants. So I’ve been skipping more than I’ve been listening. ——- I listen to about 4 four hours of podcasts a day on news, science, software, finance (but all on double speed, so, it is actually only two hours) and I've been gorging on gardening, aquaponics, permaculture podcasts for the past couple months. This podcast is definitely worth a spot in your lineup if you like this kind of thing. It is definitely the best permaculture podcast ever and maybe the best gardening podcast too. I've probably listened to almost one of these a day since I started this podcast a month ago. My favorites so far are the joint book discussions of Sepp Holzer's book and of Gaia's Garden. I wish more of the back episodes were available in iTunes, I would love to hear the whole series of those. Not every episode is a gem, I didn't need three hours of content on electric tractors, and, if you are trying to convince me to give up soap, I need more than two antidotal data points.

    Arrogant
I've listened to four of these podcasts now and all I can say is this guy probably thinks he's too good for your ears. On top of that, you probably owe him something and you need to pay up. There are so many good podcasts on permaculture and homesteading out there, don't waste your time with this one. This guy is a straight up jerk.
  • Awsomesauces
Long on rambling, short on content
Poor audio quality doesn't help these long rambling episodes. You can find some decent information, but it takes effort.
  • PermaPunk
    No respect for listeners
Man, this guy could give his listeners such a good show... he just knows his followers will listen no matter how crappy a podcast he puts out! Lousy sound quality just makes it painful to listen to, and then he insists on recording in the car, or when he is on the toilet... who knows. Just painful.

    Turned Off
I thought the podcast was okay. I would occasionally find some of the info very interesting or helpful. I was turned off by a recent episode when Paul referred to people who favor the exclusive use of native plants as "plant bigots." I don't even group myself into that category but the derogatory and arrogant tone of that podcast just isn't my vibe. I've unsubscribed and will continue to listen to other podcasts in this category that are just as, if not more informative, and have more positive, diplomatic, and humble perspectives.
  • Bekkasgarden
    Sorry...
Didn't find most of the content useful. I'm not patient or interested enough in most of the conversation to glean the tiny nuggets of useful information. The expletives are distracting, unnecessary and unprofessional.

    Enjoy The Podcast
Searched out your podcast after listening to you on TSP. Love what you are doing with the 'laboratory' and I enjoy hearing all about it. Wish you wouldn't use the F-word so often. Just makes me a little uncomfortable. If you can tone that down a bit, I will continue to listen for a long time.

    Knowledge is Power
Change can be hard. Paul does great job in making new info fun and funny.

    Thanks Paul
    Keep up the good work.

    Could use some polishing
It's hard to listen to his long tiring tirades sometimes. I have been following for some time and I have gotten to the point that I listen to only maybe 10% of the shows. It's hard to listen to someone talk about how great they are for over an hour and then ask for money to listen to it again. A little bit of humility and humbleness would go a long way. If he wants to charge people for his intellectual prowess he should have some quality behind it (I mean that in a good way).

    Big promises, no delivery
I wasn't going to write a review, but then I saw that he chose to call this a science podcast, so lets apply some science. This podcast has a lot of cool ideas in it. But coupled with those cool ideas are a lot of outrageous claims. Paul never bothers to find anything that is actually proof for them. He claims that you can make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year off of permaculture, but the examples he points to aren't making money off of raising food, they are making money off of entertaining tourists by how they raise food, often with interns doing the grunt work. He makes claims about productivity increasing off the land, but the only way he ever backs this up is by making a series of loose links "you plant two crops in the same field, you get two harvests" sort of thing. He never attempts to measure anything, so we can never know if the two crops in question are competing with each other and reducing the harvest off each other. He claims that he grew healthy bacon, and that his customers would come to him and say that other bacon would kill them and that his was fine. Well it's bacon, and he is taking the rationalizations of someone who eats soo poorly that their doctor is concerned for their continued survival that his products were safe. That's not science, that's speculation by completely untrained people who have shown that they clearly do not understand how to develop and maintain a healthy diet. If you raise scientific objections to Paul he is going to get angry at you. If you post scientific proof to his forum he is going to delete it. If you complain about it he will ban you, no matter how polite you are. He is an anti-science bully, who makes his money off of selling dreams of success. It's the same formula that MLM marketers and con artists use. Offer them a big reward, and if anyone complains throw them out.

    Unlistenable... and I really tried.
It's really too bad; he gets some great guests on this show and then because he can't seem to leave his ego at the door, he just decimates most opportunity out of each podcast. Often infantile and occasionally like listening to a sullen teenager, It's a huge disappointment because based upon his experience and knowledge this should be a much more interesting podcast. But it isn't.

    Thanks Paul
Thanks Paul, long time lurker of the empire. Love the podcasts, love the updates since you moved to 'The Project'. It's great to be able to listen in on these interesting conversations and reviews/synopsis while driving, walking and working. Please keep them coming :-)

    Skip it
I tried giving this guy a chance, thinking he would improve, but he rambles or should I say, rants on and on but never actually talks about anything relevant. I actually listened to about eight or ten casts. I started thinking of him as the Glenn Beck of permaculture.

    Great Job!
I'm a young permaculture enthusiast with dreams of building my own permaculture homestead some day and I can't thank you enough for putting so much time an effort into making all of this awesome information accessible! You rock!
  • diamondfission
    Got some good info.
I like the book reviews here and their since i have tons of drive time and no read time. This guy seems to have the same goals for setting the pinnacle of living depiction for permaculture. I want to beat him there and be the 1st in ohio with the ultra-krameterhof minus the massive mountains we lack.

    Very informative, extremely annoying
Paul has made huge contributions to the Permaculture world. I'd like to begin with that. His website and this podcast have huge amounts of information that you generally won't find elsewhere. I listened to about 40 episodes, and then just couldn't take it any more. Of a one hour episode, perhaps one third actually has useful content, the rest is just random rambling. On top of that is Paul's constant self-aggrandizement. He has strong opinions, not in itself a bad thing, but the condescending and judgmental force with which he bludgeons the listener with them is just too much for me to handle. Go somewhere else for your permaculture content.

Information is Great. Sound Quality makes it almost unbearable.
Paul is clearly an expert on his topic. He picks relevant, useful information with interesting interviews. Unfortunately, it sounds like he's recording from inside a wind tunnel. After listening, I frequently have a headache, due to the terrible back ground noise. It's a shame that this can't be corrected. Until then, I'll try and muddle through while looking for something with better audio quality.

    Quality information
5 out of 5 for two reasons! 1. I don't like to complain about things that are free 2. I don't complain about quality products! Keep up the good work! ( just with a little less SiFi please!)
  • greyismyfavoritecolor
You have better things to do.
Wheaton is very honest about the unprofessional podcast he produces. You won't mind this a bit if you like precocious toddlers continually ploying for attention in the immediate background. They joke about the slurping of food during the podcast. I did not hear that but found the children to be annoying. I listened to a few podcasts before forming an opinion. The podcast about rocket mass heaters was very informative; the advice to try it outside before placing it within the home was insightful. Unfortunately the podcast takes a long time before it gets to real information. Wheaton, his family, and his colleagues seem like genuinely nice people but there is better information, produced qualitatively without all the social setting.
  • Seethroughcanoe
    Seriously great podcast!
I actually enjoy the dinner time conversations. It shows the softer side of the ruthless evil dictator known as Paul Wheaton.
  • gleifheit
I wish I could have done it
Stumbled on this through Reddit, and its link about Rocket Mass Stoves. I really wanted to learn about these. Unfortunately I was greeted with an astonishing 2 hour 50 minute long podcast. Ok, I certainly have listened to things that I WISH were that long. oooh. sounds like they recorded this on a calculator. Its ok, not a lot of money in homesteading for recording equipment, I can deal. Oh, you're going to not only start a podcast as you are starting a meal, but audibly smack your disgusting mouth on microphone to spite someone who told you that that was rude and unpleasant to listen to. Smart way to build listeners. deleted.

    Sound Quality
I love what you guys are doing. But PLEASE work on sound quality. Pretty Pretty Please?
  • Whatswrongwiththispic
    At least he is honest
He can be very interesting until he gets off track over and over. Brilliant man, but he is not cut out for podcast. I do respect the fact that he even says he is waiting for someone better to come along and take over.

    Great Work Paul! :)
Paul, I saw that you hadn't got a review since like October!!! Crazy man. I just wanted to let you know that I'd put you right up there with Sepp, and I agree with you about him practically being King Perma. I absolutely LOVE your podcasts, and am currently on Ep.23, just trying to get as much info as possible. Keep up the great work, and I'm going to try to find a bunch of ways to support you and your devious plots for world-domination! :) P.S. Don't worry about the sound quality. Folks who nit-pick about it either haven't listened to many episodes, or are just snarky... ya, I think you know what I mean.

    My favorite podcast.
    Actionable powerful entertaining.
  • Twigart
    Right on man
Paul is definitely top of the class, in his knowledge an his attitude. I especially love how he advocates trying to make money with permaculture.

    Brilliant!
= dynamic, polemical, inflammatory & wicked. Paul, please do not stop or tone it down!
  • maryannsn
    Thank you so much, Paul!
I am new and have learned so much from you. Thank you for posting the podcasts and I hope you continue them. By the way I love your practical down to earth approach. As it is a big turn off to listen to groups and individuals try and sell their religious (spiritual) views with permiculture. I.e. The mother-goddess, etc. :)
  • SurvivNca
    Awesome podcast
Well worth your time. You will learn something with every listen.
  • munimiller
    Very Excellent!!
    Love the show. Great content.
  • Mercator Projection
    great permaculture discussion
Listened to first three podcasts and, so far, its great. Ep. 2 & 3 were recorded in a car during a road trip, so overall sound quality is poor, but understandable. Hope quality improves in future episodes. Great podcast with a wealth of info. Enjoy the format with Paul just talking unscripted and Jocelyn keeping the discussion on track.

Great source of diverse sustainable projects...
Found out about this podcast after Paul was interviewed by Jack Spearko (sp) at the TSP. Podcasts are an open format mostly recording interviews and seminars discussing how to implement different ideologies of systems and potentials obstacles that one may face. I really enjoy hearing all of the success stories and am considering how I will scale some of them into my urban homestead under development. Aaron in ABQ, NM

    love it
I've been looking for a podcast about Permaculture by someone who actually practices it, not just someone talking theory. Thanks to Paul Wheaton, my search is over. As an added bonus, Paul has a voice and personality that makes for enjoyable listening. I love it.
