True Crime #220

This feed is dedicated to the original 93 episodes of Murdaugh Murders Podcast. Join us on the original MMP feed (https://staypes.ky/truesunlight) where we continue to fight for justice in this saga and others. For nearly 100 years, one family traded influence and held power in the South Carolina lowcountry until a fatal boat crash involving an allegedly intoxicated heir-apparent shed sunlight on a true crime saga like no other.  Award-winning journalist Mandy Matney has been investigating the Murdaugh family since that fateful night in 2019. The now-infamous Murdaugh family is at the center of a litany of criminal investigations into fraud, obstruction of justice, the 2021 double homicides of Paul Murdaugh and his mother Maggie, the 2015 murder of young Stephen Smith, the suicide-for-hire plot of family patriarch Alex Murdaugh (who has since been convicted of Paul & Maggie’s murders) and a vast insurance scheme that preyed on the region's most vulnerable citizens. Matney's podcast, ranked #1 globally in 2021 and 2023, provides unmatched insight into the horrific deaths, botched investigations and newly-uncovered crimes that are all interconnected.  Every corner of the justice system seems to be connected to this vile web of deceit, murder and corruption. Later featuring Co-host Liz Farrell, you’ll follow along in real time from South Carolina as their exclusive sources guide listeners on a journey to expose the truth wherever it leads. Watch the Netflix series
it’s notsomuch the voice of the narrater, it’s the lack of interest in her storytelling I got thru about 6 episodes and they mostly start with what she doesn’t know then takes about 30min to share a 911 call or a redacted statement from law enforcement that she reiterates what it says; all while making small jabs at other podcasters or “YouTubers” for not being real journalists (but shes doing the same thing… regurgitating info??). Save yourself the time (& the vocal fry) and watch the Netflix series.

    What if?
What if Alex paid Becky Hill to tamper with the jury, so that he could appeal his verdict. She knew better than to chat with the jurors. Maybe she liked Alex and agreed to help him out.

    Great research!
An interesting story on which the reporter does a massively deep dive. Thank you!

    Can’t do it
I was really excited about this podcast because I’m interested in the case and my coworker recommended it. As I was listening to the first episode, I was very annoyed by the audio quality, so I looked at the reviews to see if maybe people mentioned it and maybe said it got better…no one said it got better but many were complaining about the “vocal fry”, which I had never heard of. I kept listening and got over the audio stuff and some of the audio got better but over time I just couldn’t look past the near-constant defensiveness, self-righteousness, and self-promotion. It completely took away from the story and was very unprofessional. I’ve listened to a lot of true crime podcasts but never experienced this. Can’t do it. One thing on the vocal fry. The host really doesn’t like that “haters” have an issue with it and she has said she can’t do anything about it, yet, her prerecorded messages that are played each episode do not have vocal fry. She sounds interested and pleasant. You definitely can control it! Maybe you don’t want to or don’t think you should have to, fine, but don’t lie to me please. lol

I couldn’t get past the vocal fry.

    Great Content and Hosts
Awesome content and a well researched story in every episode. These hosts always bring the evidence and aren’t afraid of anyone when it comes to getting answers. And if anyone’s voice bothers people as much as it seems to in these reviews, just realize they need to get their head checked. Alternatively, play it at 1.25 times (I’ve never noticed any issue with any voices)

    Ehh
I love true crime and really enjoy multi episodes/seasons. The info was great, the story line is so interesting but to be completely honest I couldn’t get past a couple episodes because of her voice, not just the vocal fry but the way the host speaks is awful, kinda like a southern frog valley girl.

    It’s ok
Good investigative reporting, but hate that fact that she constantly slams other podcasters and YouTubers and talks badly about those who complain about her voice. She also says that investigative journalism is a lot of work and it’s exhausting….so like get a different job if your not happy doing this. It’s weird because she brags about being head of journalism but complains about it. PS: I don’t hate her voice, but can see why people compare it to Kim K. lol

    Lacks Integrity
My prior review got deleted. I wouldn’t have bothered to repost, but it’s so clear that the intention of this podcast is to build the host’s brand, and not to represent the victims (as she claims). Disingenuous, lacking integrity, and shameful management of an important story- she’s profiting off other people’s grief, and it’s gross.

The REASON We All Came. Phenomenal.
Mandy Matney IS the reason most people outside the Carolinas have ever heard of Alex Murdaugh. Her investigative work is unmatched (at LEAST in this region), & I am so proud of everything she’s accomplished. This podcast is a masterpiece.

The propaganda in this podcast is insane
Apple why do you allow liars on your platform? These are washed up opinion bloggers.

True Sunlight podcast can be gripping!
Mandy and her team seem to have a knack for diving deep into the details and unraveling complex narratives. It's like detective work for the ears, piecing together the puzzle of human behavior and justice.

This is the journalism that will save us all!
Mandy and her team are so dedicated, so detailed, and so consistent in their search for the truth “wherever that takes them” as she says. Truly so grateful that we have people like this investigating and looking out for us all while these good ole boys think they can run this country
  • ryhhjfddhjj
    Interesting
In depth well put together but her voice is like a caricature of the epitome of a vocal fry
  • Nickname Was Already Taken
    Unprofessional
It peters off before end of run; pushing their new money podcast for full telling of the full story. Neglect this one.

    Quality
The voice isn’t my problem but the quality of the recordings are awful

    Amazing work
I just started listening to your podcast. I absolutely love your work!!

    Nails on a chalkboard.
Very hard to listen to. Notice how the reviews got removed as well. Their use to be over one thousand reviews. What happen to all the negative reviews that were deleted to bring the podcast rating up. Still clinging to click bait and sensationalized drama to get listeners and money. Move on and profit off someone else’s family.

    Amazing 🤩
This podcast is amazing! I love Mandy Matney’s voice and I love how she goes into details properly and doesn’t just skip parts of the case. Mandy did an amazing job at explaining things that I didn’t understand in other podcast about the Murdoch Murders. I feel like Mandy should do other cases like this because I loved her podcast and yes, I know she is doing another one but it’s not like this one. I love Mandy Matney and I think she did an absolute amazing job at her podcast. I support whatever she does next.

    Awesome Poscast
Just started listening to this podcast. And I have to say I’ve learned more details from this podcast than from anything else. Great show!!

    To much music
You do do a good job but why are you playing music when you play the phone calls it’s really hard to hear them speak!

    Voice
Hi I just started listening to your podcast. Your voice is just fine. I like the way you walk us through all the evidence.

    Amazing ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Reporting
    Amazing reporting and boardcast!!!

    Good content
I like the content, but agree the hosts voice is tough to listen to. It’s a podcast, so although she can’t help it, it is an important factor. I’m going to keep pushing through.
  • HWC0108
    Distracting voice
The information is ok, but Mandy’s voice is so distracting and I had to stop listening. She says she can’t help how she talks, but vocal fry is controllable.
  • FloDasher
Info is good; production is eh
I gave up halfway through the first episode. I’m sure the investigation by the host was thorough, but her voice sounded so uninterested, I couldn’t get interested. The production was very dry and sounded like someone emotionlessly reading a book without inflection or tone. Too bad - I’m sure the work out in was great.
  • DPUFC
    Painful listening
The good ole boy bit is ridiculous. The names are shorter than the annoying good ole boy bit and much easier to follow. I couldn’t even make it 30 minutes before I gave up. The delivery is also very lacking. Find a better podcast.

    Great!
I love this podcast! It is perfect for me, after watching the show about this, it helped me to refresh my memory and add onto my information. Also, to all the people who say the host’s voice is annoying or distracting, get over it. It is her voice, what do you expect her to do about it? I think her voice is great! My fav podcast so far!
  • Trying to hold on
    Review
I’m trying to hold on to the next but it seems I’ve already heard the same things covered on other platforms and host lags the information….maybe a little bit more upbeat in tone?

    Great Reporting
    Love her perspective and reporting!

    Good and Bad
Details and info is amazing but her voice is super distracting and the constant criticism of other news reporters is extremely disappointing..no one cares girl just give the details

    Terrific Podcast
Excellent reporting and broadcast. I really enjoyed your interview with Kathleen Madigan (11/22/23), which finally got me to listening to your podcast which Kathleen has been supporting for some time. You're doing a great job. Nothing wrong with any of it and your voice sounds fine to me. Keep up the good work young lady.
  • Vince_Versa
    Why
Why did you delete my review Mandy? You actually deleted thousands of reviews. It now says you have only 83 ratings. You had several thousand before. You don’t take criticism well as we all know. The show is still awful. Your other shows are awful. You're not good at this. Find something at which you can be competent.
  • Psychic friend
Very informative and breaks it down easily
Mandy very clearly works very hard and does an excellent job laying out the story. This is a great podcast to get the full story broken down in a easy to follow timeline and great information. There are reviews about her voice, it’s never been a distraction. Mandy has a regular voice, it’s fine.
  • Betty Jean R
    Details details
No matter what other sources you’ve listened to about the Murdaugh’s, you will hear details in the podcast you won’t get elsewhere.
  • stroodle8368
    Positive and negative
So far, so good. But I do have an issue with her constantly stopping the story to tell why other reporters are incompetent. Their poor reporting is irrelevant to the story and completely unprofessional. Move along. Focus on the sources and accurate information and you’re good to go!
  • buffy3737
    Great job
I’m late to the game with this case just started listening and want to say thank you for all your hard work and dedication!!! It’s not easy to do what you do and I respect it. Thank you for putting yourself out there because I wouldn’t have the guts to do it so again massive respect!
  • Keepn-it-real
    Naive and Stupid
Mandy has no idea how the law works and she seems to think she is the mastermind who brought down the Murdaugh family. Give me a break and have some respect for the court system and law enforcement. Mandy is a HYPOCRITE who is MAKING MONEY off the victims of these crimes.

Better Shows and Podcasts to Listen to.
Someone recommended this podcast to me re: this case but it’s not very good. The audio quality is often subpar and the content seems to be repetitive and not organized or concise. There are better investigative shows and podcasts professionally done to follow this case.
  • Atrimbl1
    My Prior review was deleted
Hard to listen to because they seem to down other journalists and play victim. I haven’t had a reason to listen since the big trial is over
  • Really wanted to like this 18
    Insufferable
I tried really hard to get into this podcast but the host is truly painful to listen to. This is not journalism with integrity. This is vengeful. She talks about bringing things to light where we many times she is reaching in her assumptions. Also, I noticed many of the negative reviews have been deleted which has raised the overall rating of this podcast.
  • makm1997
    Mandy is unbearable
Mandy is insufferable. I’m of the believe if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all. However, everything Mandy says is an attack at others so it’s only fitting people be honest about their opinion of her. Hey Mandy, if you have a problem with literally everyone, the problem is you. (Wonder how long until this review gets deleted as well.)
  • t4titans
    Love it!
I recently (today lol) just happened on this podcasts trying to find a good one about the whole story of all of these cases. I am truly 100% loving Mandy’s podcast and you can tell this girl definitely did her homework and extra credit researching these cases! Just today I’m about 5-6 episodes in, starting from the very first one. Thank you so much Mandy for all the hard work you have put into this!! I have shared it to my family and friends who are also true crime listeners!! Thank you again! Tonia
  • kkitty93
    Dedicated Journalist
Mandy is the most dedicated, serious, unbiased journalist I have ever come across in this exhausting case! Keep going Mandy but take time for yourself. Thank you for all your hard work!!
  • Mommazoo1234
    Eh
I mean, it’s not BAD. Sometimes it sounds like you’re listening to a podcast by Paris Hilton or some valley girl from the 90s… but 93 episodes is a lot to listen to, definitely doesn’t need that many. But like I said, not a bad listen when I’m waiting for all of my other favorite podcasts to come out with new episodes.
  • xfrgdhh
    Wow!
    Incredible journalism!!!
  • Jemetta
    You did great
I did not watch the trial on TV like my other friends. But I think I got more detail and backstory than they did. Yo did an amazing job on investigating and reporting on everything.
