Books #187

Each week on Smart Podcast, Trashy Books, Sarah Wendell interviews authors, readers, reviewers, bloggers, publishing professionals, editors, and librarians about romance novels, which are among the most popular genres in fiction worldwide. Popular guests include: Ilona Andrews, Robin Bradford, NPR's Barrie Hardymon, Chuck Tingle, Sarah J. Maas, and Rachel Aaron. Amanda Diehl, co-pilot of the SS Smart Bitches, makes regular appearances with maximum silliness, especially during our Romantic Times Rewind episodes, where we take a look at old issues of Romantic Times Magazine (1981-2018). Frequent topics include romance novels, the way the genre is changing, and the brilliant and interesting people who read, write, and produce it, and issues common among romance readers. Plus, we always recommend some books we're reading and really enjoying. Learn more at SB-TB.com/Podcast. Join our Patreon for complete mayhem, shenanigans, and more!

    Clever and interesting
I’ve been listening to this podcast for years. Sarah Wendell always has interesting guests, mostly authors but lots of other people too. If you want to know about poisonings, romance novels, book trends, book publishing, and who knows what else (the poisoning episode really stuck in my mind) this is the podcast for you!

    Awesome Podcast for Readers!
I rarely review but I’ve listened to and loved this podcast for years and is one of the few Patreons I contribute to! If you love reading romance or are adjacent, you’re in for a huge treat and your TBR pile will grow exponentially!!!

    Best Podcast for Romance Readers
Sarah Wendell's podcast has been going for 12+ years, and is always the first listen of the week for me. Not only do I get great reading recommendations, but the kind, supportive community of readers, authors and other folks has enriched my life in so many ways. Please listen!

Smart, Funny, Nuanced Conversations about Romance and everything
Sarah Wendell has been a force in Romancelandia since blogging was shiny and new. She understands the genre, and even more importantly she understands its readers. The pod alternates interesting and hilarious author interviews, both romance related and not*, with content about gaming, cover snark, food, and just any and all the things. Episodes cover the range from serious to absolute WTFery. All of it is approached from a foundation of intense love for the genre in all it's pink and fuscia glory. My favorite part is that she ends every podcast with a terrible joke. It's the best. *Check out the interview with the Author of Laziness Does Not Exist

Reminds me of a night with friends after a couple glasses of wine.
If you are a fan of romance, hilarious conversations, gaming, and random discussions about food this podcast is fantastic! Sarah does such a great job of being authentic in her interviews with authors to make it feel like a conversation among friends. When she and Amanda do an episode together it reminds me of slumber parties growing up that have loads of silly conversations and shenanigans. This podcast is great for book recommendations and for giving you that warm feeling you get inside when hanging out with your favorite people.

Witty, charming, funny safaris to Bonetown
Sarah Wendell and Amanda are smart, funny Menschot, as are nearly all the writers and others who guest on the podcast. They take brisk and appreciative views of a wide swath of romances and romance paradigms. Sometimes they’re making fun of a cover or a trope— hilariously— but they take each novel seriously, which is courteous and also makes everything funnier. Highly recommended for romance aficionados, newcomers, pop culture scholars, and anyone who’s up for a terrific time. Transcripts follow podcasts after a little gap, a real advantage for those who can’t or prefer not to listen.

You would be amazed the crap I’ve learned from this podcast. Huge backlog if you need something to binge on a car trip.

    Ready for some fun
This is a smart podcast. Sarah and her team put together a quality program. My favorite episode right now is the Deanna Raybourne interview where they discuss Killers Of A Certain Age. The interview covers a range of topics such as why did the author choose the methods of murder she did to the most interesting murder facts. Most the episodes offer insight into the writing process and a chance to know more about the book industry as a whole from authors, publishers, reviewers, to readers.

the only good podcast about romance novels
in the past week I've sampled half a dozen of the most-recommended podcasts that deal with the subject of romance novels and this is - by miles, absolutely no contest - easily the most thoughtful, enjoyable, informative, and all-round listenable one of the whole lot if you're a moderately intelligent person in need of a romance novel-related podcast that you can tolerate, you can stop looking! this is the one

    Love this show
I love getting to peek behind the scenes and learn about authors and what goes into writing their books. I also really appreciate the inclusion of books on women's health and other issues, in addition to all the great romance novels.

    Fantastic
I am currently listening to the back catalog of episodes starting in 2012 and have just reached 2014. The show is tremendous fun, the host is personable and I find it very informative even though I’m not a romance reader.

    Funny and so relatable
I listen to this podcast regularly even if I have no plans to read the books under discussion—it’s just that funny and enjoyable. Super thoughtful too with regards to difficult topics.
