Ink Stained Wretches

494

Eliana Johnson and Chris Stirewalt love the news business but they hate a lot of what’s happening to it these days. Using their decades of experience in print, digital and TV news they tell the story behind the stories, always on the lookout for bias, sloppy reporting and, well, just plain wretched journalism. Every week they help you to be a better, smarter news consumer.

    I’ve Tried But I Can’t
Eliana, I like you. I always enjoy you on Megyn Kelly’s show. Chris, I’ve tried to like you but after listening to this latest show, I think I’m done. You have TDS, sir. Just admit it and move on. I used to think you were objective and fair but you are not — at least not when it comes to Trump. So I’m done with this podcast.

    Wonderful and Fun
Look forward to this podcast every week. Great commentary and helps me keep up with news I might’ve missed.

    Tiresome.
50% insightful and interesting, 50% inane and facile. I was ok with that balance for a while but given their whole schtick is pointing out the bias in other media, I just can’t take their hypocrisy anymore.

    Conservative media
Eliana perfectly exemplifies conservative media/thought…She, & conservatives generally, think that THEY get to define the political ideology of everything & everyone. If she believes it, then it must be true. Just because you whine that something is liberal, doesn’t mean it is. It’s wild annoying.

    Surprised
I expected to be annoyed by the Jonah Goldberg interview, but I was not. It was an excellent podcast episode. It’s not that I’m a Trump supporter. I don’t really care about Trump (and I agree with a lot of the criticism) and I don’t care at all about Fox News (no tv consumption here for decades). It’s that I expected a smug-fest of tribal snark, but the interview was smug-free and with very little snark. A very thoughtful interview. Thank you. I’ve changed my mind.

    Disappointed in the recent bias
I’ve been listening to Wretches since its inception and really enjoyed it. I love Chris and his take on the media. I have noticed that over the past month or so, there has been an obvious bias against Biden. Every comment by Eliana includes “old and senile” or “old and dementia” when discussing Biden. When discussing Trump the most she will say is “crazy” No mention of his old age, mental instability or family history of Alzheimer’s disease (which runs in families). Not even a discussion of Trump slurring his words or making up words while ranting during his rallies (again, a loss in language skills is a clear indicator of Alzheimer’s). Clearly they are both old and not sharp, but Eliana and even Chris only point out Biden’s errors, and gloss over or ignore Trump’s clear decline. I’m done. Unsubscribed.

    The best podcast on media
This is an invaluable podcast because it offers straight talk on both the left and right media bubbles. Bravo!

    Wonderful but…
This show is excellent but could be vastly improved if Chris stopped interrupting Eliana. Chris’s interruptions are especially annoying during segments where each host is supposed to present a story. When it’s Eliana’s turn, let it be Eliana’s turn. Frequently, Eliana says 2 words before Chris jumps in and commandeers her segment. Your audience is interested in what you *both* have to say.

    Constructive Criticism
I really want to like this podcast because i respect both of the hosts as journalists so much. When EJ is on Megyn Kelly it’s like night and day contrast to her own podcast. Chris is brilliant but the whole podcast is so unfocused. I suspect you could really benefit some professional producers if you can afford it. Maybe it’s just a fun project and you have no interest. But it’s very hard to listen to in its current state regardless of the quality of substance. There’s no natural chemistry between the hosts and it doesn’t flow at all.

    Clear and objective
Refreshing to hear reporters expressing views with clarity and humor while objectively talking about the once respected field of news. I worked in the field when the landscape was very different and have compassion for folks who are still fighting the good fight. Best Eric Los Angeles

    Chris, please quit interrupting Eliana
I like the show. And I would like it even more if Chris would STOP INTERRUPTING Eliana. I want to hear what she has to say. Eliana, if necessary you must start interrupting Chris so that he will know how it feels.

    Never miss
Great podcast. I’ve listened to every episode from the start. One quibble, should t it be “los wretchos?”
  • The S.K.P. Machine
    Not Worthwhile
The Wretches are “big fans” of journalists who publish factually incorrect stories, so long as those journalists are their friends. That’s behavior they mock in others, but are not self-aware enough to recognize in themselves.

    Climate stupidity
Chris thanks for a great podcast. To extent the Climate Fear Porn, I had a boss years ago, an entrepreneur in ag business in Eastern Illinois a region with working class people similar to your native West Virginia. Any way the old school weather people would forecast Big Snow Storms, Big Rains, Tornadoes, the drumbeat of the forecast is the same as the Fear of today’s Climate Warriors. But Jerry’s saying after the forecast “We’re all going to die! We’re all going to die! Then tomorrow we’ll wake up and go back to work! And live our lives!

Can spot every bias but their own
Well, you aren’t wrong about the media being ink-stained wretches. I’ve tried with this pod, I really have. I want to like these guys but when people talk about out of touch media? You are the pot talking to the kettle. For example, when you are comparing the Biden apple to the Trump orange and saying it is CLEAR that Biden is in worse decline, how is this objective? They are both declining rotten old fruit, give it rest. We know already, let the platforms — or lack thereof outside of “l’estate, moi” — be the determining factor. There are very clear messages from both camps on offer here. The age thing is a dead horse that has done beat itself to death and isn’t changing because. There doesn’t have to be both sides of a story, when the shape of it all is circle of political hackery looking to equivocate things that a kindergartener can tell the truth of. Do better, y’all. You are part of the problem.

    Informative, fun, and fair!

    One of my favorites
I eagerly look forward to Friday mornings to get a review of the news about the news. I appreciate the continued views on the decline of local media. I’d love to see it thrive and appreciate both Eliana and Chris’s views.

    Love this Podcast!
I’ve listened to Chris since his first podcast and he is my favorite newsperson/pundit, by far. I love the way he reports without bias … not obviously for one political side like so many others. I trust his reporting. Also have enjoyed listening to Eliana and hearing her take on “the news about the news” and, on a lighter note, share her obsession of designer handbag news! Keep up the great work!!

    Love it!
Your podcast is my favorite, I absolutely love it! I wish it were more than once a week.

    1/3024 review
I’m continually amazed that Chris and Eliana take it as a point of pride that junk food and copious amounts of red meat constitute the good life! After all, the average listener to “Ink Stained Wretches” is not exactly the Bubbas and Goobers of the land.

    Disgusted
I have been an eager listener to the podcast and enjoy the well reasoned critiques. I was disgusted to listen to Chris play off his news organization being one of the many (all?) news organizations calling the Iowa caucuses while voting was ongoing. Saying “we all knew” or “polling happens on the way in” or “we weren’t As early as others” is weak equivocation. It doesn’t matter if it would have changed anything. If you participate in doing that, you participate in the weakening of public confidence in the process. You are complicit and need to own it. You may still retain a small amount of wonder at why your profession rates behind Congress in popularity (probably rates behind syphillis at this point), well, wonder no more. Eliana was right to say it was a “bad look” but it goes way beyond that in the final dissolution of trust in the rasonable sounding people in media. Sad, because you were among the few we could to turn to…..

Finally a great podcast on the media.

    Appointment Listening
I look forward to “El Wretchos” every Friday. (Sometimes they surprise listeners on Thursday.) I discovered Chris Stirewalt via The Fifth Column and Eliana Johnson through this podcast. Now I also follow the latter online at the Washington Free Beacon and the former on TV at NewsNation. Wretch on!
  • JadedConservative
    Wretch On…
Long time fan of the Wretches. I followed Chris and his expert political prognostications since his time at Fox. I was introduced to Eliana via the podcast. Her questions at the NewsNation debate were excellent and though I suspect she would groan at the idea, think she deserves a place in television media being her. I look forward to the pod and enjoy the variety and analysis. Please keep it up and congratulations to Chris on his fast rising star at NewsNation. I find NN replacing Fox on my TV.

    Best review of media
I don’t always agree with the politics, nor the interpretation, of Chris and Eliana, but it is the best, most thought-provoking media podcast available. And. . . the style section!

    Useful and Entertaining
Eiliana and Chris have good chemistry. He’s a little bit Country. She’s a little bit Bossa Nova.

    Best News Podcast
Chris and Eleana (sp?) are a fantastic team. Funny, smart, and consummate pros. Their POV feels center right, which gives them a great vantage from which to comment in right and left. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

One of the podcasts I never miss
Always informative and entertaining. Never a bad episode. You won't find more insightful analysis of news and politics anywhere else.

    Does Eliana’s back hurt?
Have been an avid listener since the beginning, but Chris Como’s fan boy Chris Stirewalt has moved farther left than Eric Swalwell. Eliana is absolutely amazing love when she is on the Megyn Kelly show, she makes the podcast, but having said this I couldn’t see her doing this podcast with anyone other than Stirewalt who is the AOC of the podcast.
  • Sshef
    Sullivan’s economics are worse
Thanks Eliana to the tip to the Tablet article on JakeSullivan. His economic analysis is even worse than his foreign policy. Highly credentialed morons all.
  • MustLuvOrks
    Last couple of weeks
Love you all, long time listener. Eliana is coming across as angry the last two episodes, which is fine but the whole point of the show- zooming out- is to have a selected analysis of that week’s news stories, including those biases. Just doesn’t feel right.
  • hbtennis201
    Thoughtful, insightful and entertaining
Love the pod. Please keep up the great work.

Good insight into how established media thinjs
Like most refugees from traditional conservative media, they are smart and mostly right thinking, but have been inside the loop to long to understand most of America's concerns and motivations.

    Chris, Chris, Chris
Chris, for the love of god, please stop interrupting Eliana. You’re interesting, but no one is that interesting.

    Awesome Podcast
I look forward to this podcast every week! I love hearing Chris Stirewalt’s take on things. He and Eliana Johnson complement each other very well and are informative and interesting. I can almost smell the pepperoni rolls coming out of the oven!

    Not listenable without Chris
Chris is great. But he is the podcast. Today’s guest Eli spent half the pod spouting his opinion as fact. I’ll wait for Chris to return thanks.

Smart and entertaining podcast, thank you both!
  • Zentropolis
Humorous and informative meta take on the news
Helmed by two wonderful hosts this show is a smart and funny skewering of the main stream media (and occasionally the not so main stream media). Highly recommended.
  • Arthur8895
    Fresh and witty
Really enjoy the back and forth between Chris and Eliana. The weekly schedule keeps it relevant with current events and summarizes in an easy to understand way, what is going on in the world. Keep up the great work!

    Wow
How did I miss such an excellent podcast for so long. The review of the modern statement of journalism is such that I've dropped a few other pods that were half delivering the full goods I can get here.

Great way to get your news!

    Pride games
I enjoy the podcast but this episode was annoying because Chris talked over Eliana too much. Making jokes is not more important than listening to stories by the cohost.
  • Eddb123
    Get Over It
Chris, Fox News fired you and you need to get over that if you are going to continue to comment on media bias. Your hatred of Fox and Tucker and now DeSantis is getting old. Eliana is great!
  • Hoosier Maggie
    Always Entertaining!
I look forward to this podcast every week. Their commentary on the week’s news-the good, the bad and the crazy, always make me laugh. Thank you!
