WHAT WENT WRONG

707

What Went Wrong covers Hollywood’s most notoriously disastrous movie productions, digging into the behind-the-scenes insanity of everything from massive flops to record-breaking blockbusters. In each episode, hosts Lizzie Bassett and Chris Winterbauer dive into a new film to explore the mind-blowing (and sometimes numbing) reasons why making a movie is nearly impossible (especially a good one). Produced by David Boman.

    Fave Pod. Full Stop
This podcast is truly great! It’s fun, informative, and unpretentious. Chris and Lizzie offer a well researched perspective to the bts of movies we know, don’t know, and love. I am a big fan of the show and have a grown to further appreciate movie magic after listening to this show!

If you love movies you’ll love this podcast!
Chris and Lizzie are exceptional hosts who provide an amazing amount of insight into some of hollywoods most famous (or infamous) films!

    Love this Podcast!
I wouldn’t call myself a “podcaster” (or is it “podcastee” if I’m just listening??), but I do love films and the art of filmmaking—and I absolutely love this podcast! Lizzie and Chris do a phenomenal job thoroughly researching and presenting the history and behind-the-scenes shenanigans of the movie world. If you’re a film fan looking for something fresh and entertaining, give this podcast a shot! P.S. A note to the hosts: Lizzie, your laugh is infectious and makes me giggle every time—don’t listen to the haters; ain’t nobody got time for that! Chris, your nerdiness reminds me of myself (a fellow “Chris” here), and I have to say, you’re the first person I’ve ever heard pronounce Stanley Kubrick’s name as “Q-brick” instead of “Koo-brick”—but hey, nobody’s perfect (haha, just kidding). Much love to you both and please keep up the amazing work!

    Full Stop
Someone on Reddit referenced some odd bit of trivia about the movie Tombstone and mentioned that there was a podcast that had a great episode about it, so I decided to check it out. Well a month later and I’ve gone through nearly the whole back catalog of episodes (I’m up to Chinatown as of this review). What Went Wrong has become my favorite podcast full stop. Chris and Lizzy are super entertaining and informative even if they are a little too generous in their praise of not so great movies sometimes. I’m not sure what I’m going to do when I run out of old episodes and I have to wait two weeks between shows.

Love this podcast. So entertaining and I look forward to new episodes. My only wish is that they would update weekly! I hate the wait!

    Excellent
Entertaining and in depth analysis on how moves get made!! I highly recommend and appreciate this podcast!! Great job! Bad on me for finding this so late.

A treat for the casual movie enthusiast
I love learning how stuff works (back to the early internet days of How Stuff Works!) and this podcast brings that energy in spades to the enthralling industry of filmmaking. In a time where there is so much dialogue about good movies no longer being viable to make its awesome to get history lessons from the past from two really great hosts. Keep it up!

    My favorite new binge
I love stories about the business of Hollywood and this is one of the best. The episodes are informative, entertaining, and just a really enjoyable way to shut out the ongoing nightmares of the real world.

    Amazing Film Podcasr
I have enjoyed this podcast from the first episode I heard. It makes my ride home such a joy. And I love learning about films. The two stars of the show have such a great chemistry. You are both amazing!

Don’t worry, nothing went wrong with this podcast
This podcast makes me angry, angry I just found out it exists. When I first stumbled across What Went Wrong, I was immediately apprehensive because It’s so rare to find people who actually do research before spewing false information on social media and podcasts. My first thought was “I wonder how much of this is actually true or is the podcast ‘inspired by true events’ just like the movies they cover.” They quickly shut me up when they actually cite their sources and if there’s a chance the information might not be 100% accurate, they go out of their way to make sure you understand that. I love the newer, longer podcast, it allows them to go so much deeper into the details from inception to release and beyond. I hope this podcast never goes away and I appreciate their dedication to details and accuracy.

    So so good
This podcast is so good. Informative, funny, insightful . I feel like each episode is like a documentary or a a film class but in a completely fun way. The hosts are great .

    Great Listen
Two bright, gregarious hosts discuss the making of films. They have definitely hooked into their strengths as the series progresses and I thoroughly enjoy listening to this during these rough days. Only suggestion as the podcast grows is to get a fact-checker as the occasional detail or assumption is provably wrong, but hey, we are all human and I will take these humans (and their research) over almost anyone else I see in the news today. I look eagerly look forward to the next episode.

    Great show
Wish there were even more episodes I’m burning thru them so quick. Can almost sound like I know something about film production after listening.

    Such a great listen!
This podcast is so great! It’s entertaining and gives such great information and insight in to film making!

    Addictive
Absolutely the best podcast I've found in years. The background details on so many movies I've watched over the years is so entertaining. I can usually find fault with the hosts on podcasts but I love these folks. They actually research the films and give the sources of that info so you can look into it further if you want.

    Favorite Podcast EVER
This is my favorite podcast full stop that just so happens to be about movies. I have been telling everyone I know how incredible this podcast is. Chris and Lizzie are effortless, well researched and sound incredible. I have a 2 hour commute each day to work and I actually look forward to the drive because of this podcast. My only wish? It came out every week and that they would cover my favorite movie of all time, Death Becomes Her. Please don’t ever stop making podcasting magic.

I’m a huge movie buff, so I LOVE this podcast!
My only regret is that I didn’t find this podcast sooner. It’s so interesting learning about the behind the scenes history of some of my favorite movies and I can tell that the hosts truly do their research. 5 out of 5 stars! I’m excited to start watching some movies listed on here and listen to the related episodes after each movie :)
  • lbc11217
    Really fun and informative
This IS my favorite podcast full-stop! It’s a nice blend of the business and creative sides of movie making with a dash of saucy gossip. At least once an episode, I say out loud “Oh wow, reallllly?”(It’s a little awkward at the gym lol). Please consider covering The Departed. I recently watched the Hong Kong film it’s based on and some of the shots are nearly identical. Anyway love your takes! Congrats on all your success thus far.

    Sometimes these hosts...
The hosts really come off as holier than thou. When the hosts look back on older films through the lens of 2024/25 social ethics they just go overboard clutching thier pearls." I was told a dirty limerick", the outrage!!!!
  • Dogboytrainer
    The Godfather (Part I)
Excellent as always. Can’t wait for Part II.

    Best Cast for Movie Fans!!!
I’ve been a movie fan since I was a kid and know some of the behind the scenes bits, but this show goes far and beyond what I’ve read. Lizzy and Chris have an amazing report offering up amazing knowledge from the movie world breaking down more than you can ever imagine on sets. I love it when they cap their shows off with a quick what when right, and always enjoy their opinions not only just on facts, but if they enjoy the movies too (and sometimes don’t). Wonderful show even people who aren’t necessarily deep dive movie fans will enjoy. Strap in for some great entertainment from one of the best entertainment podcasts you can find!

    Film History Done Right
An absolutely fascinating look at the insanity of creating and releasing a film. Lizzie and Chris are amazing hosts that have great chemistry, do amazing and thorough research, are thoughtful, and are honest without being pretentious and condescending.

    Love this podcast!
Great hosts, well researched, and funny while being informative. I’ve always loved getting glimpses into what goes on behind the scenes when making movies and Chris and Lizzie do a fantastic job of pulling together info and telling stories that add a rich additional layer to some of my favorite (or not so favorite ) films. I’ve laughed out loud, I’ve cried, and I’ve learned something new each episode!
  • Hillbillyvixenx
    Absolutely my favorite podcast!
I discovered What Went Wrong mid-2024. I absolutely love movies & their behind-the-scenes. One of my favorite things about and Chris & Lizzie is that you can really tell that they love movies too. It was the Galaxy Quest episode (that also got me in the feels)….that motivated me to finally leave a review. I have told everyone I know to listen to this podcast!Thank you for all you put into these episodes! I hope you and your families are all OK and you’re back to podcasting soon.

The Pod I Never Knew I Needed
This has quickly become my comfort podcast, and I’m having so much fun learning new things about both beloved movies and movies I’ve never even heard of. What’s more fun than dropping some behind the scenes knowledge on your friends and family when a movie is brought up? By the way, it was the George Lucas impression that was so funny (accurate) that it pushed me to take a min to write this review. Well done!
  • nickname: dontHave1
    Star Wars episodes.
Lizzie doing Yoda 😂The George Lucas impression at the end! I wish that Lucas did say some of those things. Really look forward to these two with every movie they meticulously research on. Very impressive.

The pod I can’t stop recommending!
This review is a long time coming! I felt like before I left my 5-star review, I should listen to (almost) every episode of the show. Can confirm: this show deserves every one of its five stars! Whether or not you’ve seen the film featured in an episode, you can jump right in – the hosts will catch you up on everything you need to know! One of the first things you’ll notice is how well-researched this podcast is. In fact, It’s so well-researched that if it was anything more regular than a biweekly podcast, Lizzie and Chris would have no time to do anything else in life. And I love how they are so generous with their sources. Most of the books from my Goodreads last year were thanks to What Went Wrong (favorite: Blood, Sweat, and Chrome). Another example of their generosity of knowledge is how they shared all their listeners’ Spotify Wrapped top podcasts at the end of the year. I took screenshots of all those stories and found a few new podcasts I’ve put into the rotation. But don’t worry, What Went Wrong will always sit at the top of that list! Thank you for everything, Chris and Lizzie!

    Absolutely Amazing Show
I can’t recommend this podcast enough. I started with one episode and before I knew it I had binged the entire back catalog and am now re-listening to episodes while I wait for the next ep to drop. Hosted by two honestly wonderful people who obviously put in the effort to bring their audience an informed and thoughtful illustration of the craziness that goes into movie making. I came for the Deadpool episode and then stayed for everything else.

    Funny & Knowledgeable
Really fun listen. Explains things without over-explaining and really walks the listener through the insanity of making a movie
  • poejunior
    Great show
Be well Chris. The both of you be well. My heart goes out… This podcast shouldn’t work, since it’s just two people talking about the research they did while the other listens, throws shade, giggles or groans. But it does work. Why? I think since we’ve seen these movies it’s utterly fascinating to go behind the scenes and hear about the human sacrifice required to make great cinema. Sure it destroys the illusion, but you’re an adult and there is no Santa Claus 🎅 Grow up People suffer for our entertainment. The hosts have great chemistry and bring joy to each discussion. Go Terriers! (COM, Class of 98’)

This has recently become my favorite podcast and I always look forward to its release. The research that goes into each show is incredible and I enjoy both Lizzie and Chris’ humor. I was so sorry to hear that both hosts were affected by the wildfires and hope that they can get settled and start to rebuild soon.

What I’ve been waiting to listen to my entire life.
I absolutely love Lizzie’s personality, comments and humor. Chris’ amazing ability to summarize and articulate different perspectives makes this a podcast anyone who even remotely likes movies can enjoy. As an IATSE Cinematographer I find it easy to listen to podcasts that are that are related to my job. This is one of the few that I can share with anyone and connect them to my love of movie lore.

    Full-Stop feel the love
Chris and Lizzie are great hosts with good back and forth and provide counterbalance to conversations around the topic and even playing devils advocate to provide fair treatment and sympathy for those affected or treated more harshly in an already harsh and judgmental world. David is in the background but is also very good when appearing on the show to guest spot he provides yet another pov on the topic. Showing the diverse influence and scope of one particular movie or another. I want to express my great appreciation in their goal of exploring the outrageous things that happen in the nearly miraculous yet simple idea of making a movie. Most of us who never consider the lives and heartbreak involved and how the entire production is a labor of love for us, the viewer. So from this viewer and Full-Stop fan thank you! Greg

    Awesome pod!!!
Big Trouble Little China was my first ep and I haven’t stopped listening since. I recently started from the beginning and just have been enjoying it so much! The friendship between Lizzie and Chris is so adorable. I find them charmingly funny and love that they educate without sounding pretentious. The research is top notch and love that they get info from different books while also using the internet. This next part is not a dig. I would love if y’all could add more POC and Queer movies like Bad Boys or Waiting to Exhale or The Birdcage Too Wong Foo. Besides that love love love the pod!
  • Animalo1996
    Fantastic
What a well-researched and engaging pod. Chris & Lizzie keep things tightly structured while allowing room for fun tangents. They’re super knowledgeable. And (miracle!) they’re funny without being annoying. I first listened because I saw the Lost episodes and obviously had to go deep. Took me a little longer to get into the movie episodes and I’m selective with the titles I choose, but the ones I *do* listen to are excellent. Finally, yes I did choose my reviewer nickname to comment on a Taylor podcast, no I didn’t realize it would be my forever name, and yes I do regret it.

Came for deep dives, stayed for the George Lucas impression
This podcast scratches that itch that online listicles never will. It’s so nice having long for deep dives into movies. Even movies I have never seen before/will never see turn out to be amazing episodes. I can not recommend this podcast enough and trust me I try. (The name Jan de Bont gets interjected into a shocking amount of conversations these days.)

    Fantastic and entertaining!
I discovered this podcast after listening to Lizzie and Chris on the big flop. I’m sad I’ve missed out until now but glad I’ve finally found you! I’ve always been a movie buff and love hearing about the behind the scenes stories for my favorite films!

    Can’t stop
I love this podcast! I’ve always loved movies and hearing their commentary is awesome. They’re both funny and interesting to listen to. I just found this a week ago and I’m just jumping around the episodes. Keep up the awesome podcast! Hopefully Chris approves of this review.

    Love!
I really love this podcast. Super interesting and the hosts are great. Very fun and easy to listen to. One reviewer said their laughter got in the way but it’s one of my favorite parts. I love both of their laughs and personalities. And whoa! Chris has an amazing singing voice!

    Just found my new obsession!
Listened to Lizzie and Chris on the Big Flop and did not hesitate to hop on over to this podcast. This podcast is it for movie fans. Lizzie and Chris bring such complimentary levels of expertise and are just fun to listen to. The research they put into their episodes is impressive- they go way beyond the well known facts and actually make you feel like you were there through each step of production. Bravo 👏

    New favorite podcast!
I stumbled on this podcast just the other day, and I love it! It’s well-researched and such a good glimpse into the behind the scenes of movies. I especially like the episodes of older movies - The Wizard of Oz Cleopatra, and Dr. Doolittle episodes have been my favorites so far. Excited to keep listening!

Interesting, Fun, & enhanced my movie hobby
It is so fun and interesting to learn details about movies I love, don't love, and have never heard of. Have shared with friends and family & they all love it. Thank you Lizzie & Chris. And, eat and drink as often as you need to.

    Awesome
I am so happy to have found this podcast. Chris and Lizzie are not only always so well prepared but also hysterical. I am a movie geek thanks to growing up with a dad that worked in the industry for 40 years so I don’t think I had a choice. Love the perspectives that they share and the banter is fantastic. Can you please do my favorite movie ever, Empire Strikes Back and pretend the prequels and sequels five exist? 🤣 can’t wait to hear what’s next.
