WHAT WENT WRONG

707

What Went Wrong covers Hollywood’s most notoriously disastrous movie productions, digging into the behind-the-scenes insanity of everything from massive flops to record-breaking blockbusters. In each episode, hosts Lizzie Bassett and Chris Winterbauer dive into a new film to explore the mind-blowing (and sometimes numbing) reasons why making a movie is nearly impossible (especially a good one). Produced by David Boman.

    AMAZEBALLS
My tattoo artist introduced me to the podcast while getting a 7 1/2 hour session. So entertaining, thoughtful, and well researched. Although I had to be careful not to laugh as to not move my arm!! 11/10

    Inaccurate, emotional nonsense.
If you need guardrails and safe spaces to dictate your ideas on art - this show is for you. After hearing the disparaging remarks about the film Tombstone (based mostly on its lack of female screen time), it’s become obvious that your opinions and commentary can’t be trusted. Not to mention, your “facts” are questionable. Art isn’t quota based. It doesn’t require you to predetermine your desires and judge the work based on those preconceptions. Especially YOUR preconceptions … which are neither A) Yours or B) Real. It’s all performative. Imagine the incredibly indoctrinated nature of your grading system when applied to other famous works: The Mona Lisa is insignificant because it doesn’t represent minorities. Sgt Pepper is a bad album because it doesn’t have enough women penned songs. Poe is okay, but he doesn’t incorporate the LGBT community enough. The exercise looks absurd, right? We get it, you’re leftists. Sadly, this tells us everything we need to know about you - so why beat us over the head with it? Does art REALLY require your supposed “modern prism?” Can you not judge it from your individual, guttural, personal perspective? Must it all boil down to quotas and “problematic” box checking? There’s something so good hiding in this show … but it’s too afraid of what the public might say without descending into homogenized lectures and prepubescent finger wagging. Ultimately, this isn’t critique. This is outcome shopping.

    Best movie podcast out there
I listen to lots of movie podcasts, and this one is my all-time favorite because the hosts are very pleasant, have a great rapport that makes me feel happy just to be with them, and their angle is extremely interesting and entertaining. Rather than just going through the movies scene by scene and/or saying what they did and didn’t like, they go through the story of how the films get made, the backstory of who made it and how they all happened, and the stories behind the scenes. They have a strong reverence for the art of filmmaking and are always respectful of the extreme difficulty of making a movie. This is the only podcast about movies I’ll listen to regardless of the movie they’re talking about. The only thing I would change is that I wish they somehow had an episode for every movie ever made. Maybe over time my wish will come true? I LOVE “What Went Wrong” and so will you!

    Love this show
This is my absolute favorite podcast! I’ve been a movie fan for as long as I can remember. And I’m kinda old! At first I was hoping there would be more ‘old’ films, ones I I had seen, so I cherry-picked the episodes. But I realized I was being a true old fuddy duddy, and started listening to all the episodes. I’ve learned so much AND am watching ALL the movies I hadn’t seen. Chris and Lizzie are a hoot and their research is impeccable. You’re keeping me young! And thanks for Snow White this week—

    Delightful, informative, funny!
Lizzie and Chris bring charm and humor to a thoughtful discussion of movie making! While they review the crazy things that went wrong on some films, they always balance it with things that went right. I appreciate the research that goes into each podcast. And frankly, Lizzie and Chris have great voices. They are easy to listen to!

What Went Wrong is so right!
A great diversion, filled with film arcanum that I don’t really need to know but I’m glad I do. Excellent hosts but I kind of miss the burps. Please do some industrial strength David Lynch (Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Inland Empire, or if you’re really crazy, Eraserhead). Keep up the good work!
  • JonOwnbey
    So interesting!
I really love hearing all of the interesting goings-on of different movies and their production. I did not expect to enjoy this as much as I have been. Keep up the great work and also please do some Mel Gibson flick. Edge of Darkness, The Patriot, Braveheart. The stories from production working with Gibson must be wild.

I am really loving this podcast series. I hope they get to some more iconic movies such as Lawrence of Arabia. Beautifully put together and love the humor too.

    Nice
This is my favorite podcast! I'm glad I found this podcast while I was scrolling through the apple podcast search function. Chris and Lizzie do a fantastic job at striking a balance between humor and information. I don't agree with everything they say but I love hearing their discussions.

    I Love “What Went Wrong”
This is one of the most entertaining and informative podcasts out there. If you love the movies, then chances are you’ll love this podcast too. The hosts, Lizzie Bassett and Chris Winterbauer, have a real fun chemistry between them. Check it out.

    Love this podcast!
One of the podcasts my kids (12, 15)will listen to with me. It’s sparked a lot of interesting questions and a running list of movies we want to watch together. Great for road trips!

So wonderful. Each episode makes me think, laugh, and nod my head and go "OH YeAH!" I'm so excited to listen in.

Best way to spend an hour and learn something to boot
I’ve listened to almost every single episode and I’m always amazed at the level of information they cover -plus the format of explaining what the movie IMDB description reads and then go soup to nuts on any given movies -how it got made, problems and workarounds..Many times I’ve re watched movies they have reviewed with new eyes. Best part of my week is when they release a new episode! Love this podcast and the hosts!

    Sometimes these hosts...
The hosts really come off as holier than thou. When the hosts look back on older films through the lens of 2024/25 social ethics they just go overboard clutching thier pearls: " I was told a dirty limerick", -the outrage!!!! AND...then reading a one star review OF their podcast ON their podcast to mock/jeer said one star review is a bit injudicious.
  • A podcast addict
    Fun, informative, fabulous narrators
This is a podcast for movie lovers who want a peak behind the curtain! I follow up each episode with a keen desire to watch the movie they discuss. (And most of them are easy to find.) In a constellation of mediocre podcasts this one’s shine is blinding!! Skip the others and go right to the top!!
  • KYoldtimer
Great movies, a lot of fun
The hosts do a great job of digging into some classic movies as well as not so classic movies. I would really like to see them take on a Clint Eastwood movie, though. Maybe one of the old man movies like Unforgiven, Space Cowboys, Gran Torino, Cry Macho…
  • evanseesred
    Perfect Balance
Other shows can take 15 minutes of banter to get to the meat of an episode. Not these two. They have the perfect balance of light humor and exposition with deeply researched and clearly presented information. It’s really the Goldilocks show in the sense that it balances these elements perfectly.

    Fascinating and funny
Not to start on a morbid note, but I discovered this podcast right as my dad was beginning to lose his battle with ALS. During that last rough week, this show was the light but fascinating escape I couldn’t wait to close my day on. Thanks for offering a bright light in a dark time for this amateur film buff.

    I’m not crying you are
I stumbled upon this show when looking for a deep dive into the backstory behind Alien 3. After listening to that episode (which is amazing) I became hooked. Now it is one of my all time favorite pods (which is saying something because I have listened to 1000’s). The two hosts do an excellent job researching every film they cover. The title might give the impression that the show is negative in tone and all about dunking on bad movies and the people involved, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s a love letter to the creative act and to all the people brave enough to try. Here is a list of WWW eps that have unexpectedly and completely out of nowhere made me get emotional: Some Like it Hot Galaxy Quest Shrek (part 2) The show is fun, full of heart, and often more entertaining than the movies themselves.

    Most reccommended
Love this podcast - I started listening to it randomly - and I’ve become a lot more interested in movies it’s lead me to dive deeper into classics and it’s been the gateway to more movie podcasts! What went wrong is the BEST though - great research funny commentary that’s not talk-showy I die laughing at the impressions especially in the thank you part of the episodes! - Thank you for the new hobby!

And all other podcasts fade into the background…
Never before in my days of listening to podcasts have I so thoroughly consumed each and every available episode after hearing a single episode. The amount of research pulled together is only outmatched by the hosts’ ability to discuss all the problems of a film’s production without descending into callous mockery or condescension. After each episode, I find myself wanting to watch the movie about which I’ve just heard all the messy details. Lizzie and Chris never forget that there are real people involved in even the biggest cinematic disaster, and I love the generosity of spirit they bring to this subject matter. Fun and funny and illuminating, I don’t think I could love this show more.

    Obsessed, the best podcast ever
I stumbled upon What Went Wrong somewhere on the world wide web (probably reddit) by a random internet stranger’s recommendation and I could not be more glad I did!! A phenomenal podcast, so well researched. Lizzie & Chris strike the perfect balance of informative and hilarious and always have room for nuance in their discussions. After every episode I’m left thoroughly entertained and feeling like I learned a bunch of new things! They are such adept storytellers I even enjoy listening to episodes about movies I’ve never seen. Standing ovation!!

I recently discovered this podcast and I’m blown away at how great it is. The detail, the way each films story is revealed and the rapport between the presenters is all exceptional. Each episode makes me smile and laugh. Incredible job - hands down my favorite podcast

    The Score
Love this show and would live to hear you guys cover The Score (2001) with Robert DeNiro, Marlon Brando, Angela Bassett, & Edward Norton.

    Great hosts
I really love the coverage of the films they discuss. You can tell how much they both love the work they do. Lizzy particularly is incredibly empathetic and human in her coverage. Any time she tears up reading something personal from the research, you can really feel how much she cares and I appreciate that it’s not edited out. In a time of so much inauthenticity it’s really refreshing to have such a human feel and a reminder how important the arts are.

    Your one mistake.
I know the title of my review is misleading but the stars aren’t! I love this podcast! Im currently binging it daily and recently joined the patreon! I’m a grown adult who still dreams of acting and though I am still “reaching for the stars!,” Ive currently landed amongst the stand-ups, improvisors and sometimes tv extras. All this to say, I love being on set and I never have ANY SEMBLANCE of an idea of what’s happening around me but this podcast has taught me a lot, including that I could get severely hurt amongst other fun things! Now to the title of this review; in my opinion, your one mistake was interviewing armorer, Larry Zanoff, because all I want now is more Larry. Wow. Long review. Thank you for this podcast! I love it! I really enjoy this podcast even when I have never seen the movie they are discussing. I can’t say that about any other movie podcast.

    Fave Pod. Full Stop
This podcast is truly great! It’s fun, informative, and unpretentious. Chris and Lizzie offer a well researched perspective to the bts of movies we know, don’t know, and love. I am a big fan of the show and have a grown to further appreciate movie magic after listening to this show!

    Love this Podcast!
I wouldn’t call myself a “podcaster” (or is it “podcastee” if I’m just listening??), but I do love films and the art of filmmaking—and I absolutely love this podcast! Lizzie and Chris do a phenomenal job thoroughly researching and presenting the history and behind-the-scenes shenanigans of the movie world. If you’re a film fan looking for something fresh and entertaining, give this podcast a shot! P.S. A note to the hosts: Lizzie, your laugh is infectious and makes me giggle every time—don’t listen to the haters; ain’t nobody got time for that! Chris, your nerdiness reminds me of myself (a fellow “Chris” here), and I have to say, you’re the first person I’ve ever heard pronounce Stanley Kubrick’s name as “Q-brick” instead of “Koo-brick”—but hey, nobody’s perfect (haha, just kidding). Much love to you both and please keep up the amazing work!

    Full Stop
Someone on Reddit referenced some odd bit of trivia about the movie Tombstone and mentioned that there was a podcast that had a great episode about it, so I decided to check it out. Well a month later and I’ve gone through nearly the whole back catalog of episodes (I’m up to Chinatown as of this review). What Went Wrong has become my favorite podcast full stop. Chris and Lizzy are super entertaining and informative even if they are a little too generous in their praise of not so great movies sometimes. I’m not sure what I’m going to do when I run out of old episodes and I have to wait two weeks between shows.

A treat for the casual movie enthusiast
I love learning how stuff works (back to the early internet days of How Stuff Works!) and this podcast brings that energy in spades to the enthralling industry of filmmaking. In a time where there is so much dialogue about good movies no longer being viable to make its awesome to get history lessons from the past from two really great hosts. Keep it up!
  • WisconsinJess
    My favorite new binge
I love stories about the business of Hollywood and this is one of the best. The episodes are informative, entertaining, and just a really enjoyable way to shut out the ongoing nightmares of the real world.

    Amazing Film Podcasr
I have enjoyed this podcast from the first episode I heard. It makes my ride home such a joy. And I love learning about films. The two stars of the show have such a great chemistry. You are both amazing!

Don’t worry, nothing went wrong with this podcast
This podcast makes me angry, angry I just found out it exists. When I first stumbled across What Went Wrong, I was immediately apprehensive because It’s so rare to find people who actually do research before spewing false information on social media and podcasts. My first thought was “I wonder how much of this is actually true or is the podcast ‘inspired by true events’ just like the movies they cover.” They quickly shut me up when they actually cite their sources and if there’s a chance the information might not be 100% accurate, they go out of their way to make sure you understand that. I love the newer, longer podcast, it allows them to go so much deeper into the details from inception to release and beyond. I hope this podcast never goes away and I appreciate their dedication to details and accuracy.

    So so good
This podcast is so good. Informative, funny, insightful . I feel like each episode is like a documentary or a a film class but in a completely fun way. The hosts are great .
  • Jonbhamm
    Great Listen
Two bright, gregarious hosts discuss the making of films. They have definitely hooked into their strengths as the series progresses and I thoroughly enjoy listening to this during these rough days. Only suggestion as the podcast grows is to get a fact-checker as the occasional detail or assumption is provably wrong, but hey, we are all human and I will take these humans (and their research) over almost anyone else I see in the news today. I look eagerly look forward to the next episode.
