LISK: Long Island Serial Killer

2,846

The LISK (Long Island Serial Killer) investigation began in May 2010 with the disappearance of sex worker Shannan Gilbert. In the following months, Suffolk County Police uncovered human remains from nine more murders, including those of the "Gilgo 4", all sex workers whose bodies were disposed of similarly. After years of virtually no new developments, Suffolk County Police arrested Rex Heuermann in connection with the murder of at least 3 victims. DNA evidence, cellphone records and witness accounts of a Chevrolet Avalanche truck all led to police zeroing in on Heuermann. As prosecutors prepare for the upcoming trial, details and accounts of Heuermann's life and behavior continue to be uncovered.Inspired by the New York Times best-selling book "Lost Girls: An Unsolved American Mystery", follow the series as it’s told through previously unheard interviews with family members, friends, police officers, government officials and others whose lives were touched by the gruesome murders. Humanizes the victims and isn’t exploitative
I like the investigative aspects of true crime, and the human story behind the victims and the perpetrators. I hate sensationalist exploitation and this podcast is not that. It’s a fascinating in depth study of the case from ever angle, from corrupt police to victims of the poverty of our society.

One of the best podcasts out there
My title says it all. The LISK podcast is so respectful of the victims and is the most in depth deep dive into the LISK case.

    Overall fantastic podcast
The only thing that takes away from this very well informed podcast is that the host and guest continue to treat the listeners like children. I am an adult listening to a podcast about a horrible person who did horrible things, I do not need to be told “this is so gruesome / upsetting / disgusting” or that I shouldn’t read the bail documents because they gave the guest nightmares. Obviously these crimes are terrible and I’m not asking for salacious details, but for the love of god enough with the theatrics, talk about the facts of the case.

Worth a listen, prep to skip ahead...
Great podcast! Love the main host. Worth the time to listen to it. Not fond of the frequent, long, and repetitive ads. Apple Podcasts? How many times can I hear that stupid ka-ching from shopify?!?! I keep the skip forward at 30 seconds and hit it constantly. I will also skip some, actually mostly all, of the added bonus content episodes. The core content is exceptional.

    Best LISK podcast by far
I just wish there were more episodes. I know you have “other projects” but as someone singularly interested in this story for some reason I wish there was more coverage from this team. It’s thoughtful, respectful ungratuitous true crime coverage.

    Stop infantilizing the listener
Great show, but enough of tap dancing around facts in an effort to be sensitive. We all know what we’re here for, we all know what the content of LISK is going to be about. It’s annoying to hear the speakers in the last episode try to be delicate about what the facts of the case are. Just spit it out already.

    Host pace
The pace of Shannon Mcgarvey’s speaking is way too slow. It was even painfully slow and halting when I increased the speed.
  • jdheusbhsjshd
    Slow and biased.
Pretends to be journalism but has a very strange but obvious POV. Too many episodes to get to relevant information.

    Binge worthy
Since RH was arrested, I heard about this podcast and to make sure I have the background, I have been binging on this podcast. Very professional approach with the lens focused on the victims. Highly recommend this podcast.

    One of the Best!
This is a very informative podcast made with utmost care in regards to the victims. I highly recommend to any true crime fan.

    The narrator’s voice is 👎
The narrator sounds like he’s trying to be sensational. Didn’t like how he read and told the story.

    Moderate decline
Why is the host on a first name basis with the accused? The honky tonk information guy from Sumter is a classic southern trope/stereotype. Not that there’s anything inherently wrong with that (there isn’t), just an observation. The problem is his embrace of “faith” in his official role as a public servant. The host’s endorsement of that position is not a good look for the show. Overall (and in addition to the initial points), this show seems to have slid in quality since its early days. I am specifically focusing on the thoroughness of research and the ability to tell a compelling story. Maybe the case has reached a less interesting point in its chronology. In any case, there is a noticeable decline, IMO.

    Great Podcast!
I am hooked! I can’t wait for the second season to drop.

    Well done!
I was addicted to this story and listen to every single show. Every time I would get into the car. Now I can’t find another podcast that I like as much as this one.

    STOP DOING RE-RELEASES
I I like your podcast and wound give 5 Stars but the re-releases are so tacky/lazy. I am stopping automatic downloads because of it and I might unfollow the show completely if the re-releases continue much longer. Podcast listeners start from the beginning and binge the whole show and will continue with automatic downloads while they patiently await new episodes for good shows. Nobody wants re-releases. Just stop already.

the best podcast for True Crime. Thank you.

    The last episode’s hypocrisy
The fact that the host and guest can’t see the hypocrisy of them being upset that someone else affected by this story would make money, WHILE making money from this story is insane to me. Also, the family of LISK are also his victims. Finally, insinuating that the wife may be a murderer or active participant in crimes due to the fact that her hair was found places is shotty reasoning at best. My wife’s hair gets everywhere and I often find it in my office, etc. where she has never been.

    Season 1.2
Just stumbled on, started season 1 and went right into season 2. Season 2 seems like a lot of repeated info from season 1. Season was interesting, short. Since it’s an ongoing case it’s fine. I’d like more info on the corruption maybe dealing with the stalling of the case? I mean I liked season 1. It just seems like it skimmed the surface, or Maybe there isn’t much to dig in to anyway? Over all it was a good podcast tho, I’d just nitpicking. Thank you

    Victims First
This podcast is truly committed to humanizing and deeply personalizing the women killed and found at Gilgo Beach. I intend to listen a second time to really know these women.

    Stop using his name
I’m interested in learning the details but I wish you and your guests would stop calling him by his first name, like he’s a friend, a human being, when he’s just evil.

    Commissioner Harrison
Great interview! He really is the person who could see how to get this investigation moving and get his task force in place with the right people.

    Must listen
Excellent journalism. After re-listening to Serial years later, I was severely disappointed in how sensationalist and irresponsible it was towards the victim (not what I thought years ago), but this podcast knocks it out of the park. Informative, thorough and most importantly responsible reporting. Well done to all involved!!

    Phenomenal
Love this podcast!!! Just binged it over the last few weeks- knew very little about LISK beforehand but heard the name mentioned often and wanted to know more. Now I feel like I’m close to an expert haha! Just love how this podcast treats the case and it’s victims… how the focus is always on the victims and moving the case forward and getting justice. Extremely well done. I’m picky about my true crime because I don’t like when cases are portrayed in an unnecessarily gruesome or dramatic way and I feel like this podcast does a great job at making the case feel real without all the unnecessary bells and whistles. I wanted to specifically shout out some of the “extra” episodes (especially in season 3) where they bring on experts or people who are particularly knowledgeable. The episode discussing the DNA stuff and then the two episodes discussing the psychology of LISK are some of my favorites. So fascinating!! I have a biology background and could have listened to hours of the DNA info- so informative and interesting! So thank you to this podcast for all of your great work!!!
  • DMAR000000
    Excellent. Informative. Devastating. Enraging.
I am a native of Suffolk County LI, Lake Ronkonkoma, with friends who live in Babylon Township and Massapequa. .. LISK is close to home. It continues to be a terrifying story of the overlooked women in society who succumb at the hands of monsters. One of those monsters is caught! But others certainly remain still. This podcast reporting is top notch. It humanizes the victims without being gratuitous. It reveals the absolute and undeniable corruption of the Suffolk County police. They interview the families. The friends and the folks working tirelessly to find justice.

    Thank you
Thank you for covering this terrible Case with determination and compassion. I don’t get why people think it’s okay for an escort to be murdered… do people forget the root of the issue , a murder happened so they are okay with someone living their daily life and interacting with the world despite they are capable of murder but if it’s a sex worker that fine? Wow that’s what really struck me. The point is, how can you over look the fact a murderer is running rampant despite the person he or she kills. Bizarre thinking from the law. It’s one skip from a sex worker to a school girl to a Starbucks employee so who cares , it’s not about a profession it’s the fact a murderer is just living their life in a community waiting for The prey. One thing I also don’t like is though is that the police arrest people on this line of work then they have a record and are basicly Screwed moving forward to have any decent jobs so they are just perpetuating a situation not helping it. They are just making money on an arrest for government funds to support

    Weirdly Enjoyable
I say weirdly because it is a podcast about a morbid subject, but it is enjoyable. Incredibly fascinating, they do a great job covering every aspect of this case. They go above and beyond, and really give you a lot to think about. They ask the questions we would, and so, if you are looking for a comprehensive guide on this subject - look no further.

Fascinating to listen to again after the fact
This is so good to listen to for the second time knowing what we know down the road. To listen to their killer profile etc is fascinating

    Repetitive and with filler episodes
I often had to check if I was re-listening to an episode because they replay previous excerpts as though they’re catering to a new listener mid-way through the season. Additionally, the bonus interviews were a little cringey to listen to. When you wade through the fluff there’s some good stuff here. I’d say about 25% of each episode is new, helpful information.

    Love
Such a great podcast . I’m back after listening to season 1 a few years ago and so excited to catch up , especially with this new arrest. Very well done ,I highly recommend

    This is RIVETING!
I started listening to all episodes from season 1 trailer all the way through to the (so far), last Lisk podcast of season 3. I listened while doing dishes, slowly, because i was listening , ( and i hate doing dishes). I listened when i was supposed to be doing Continuing Education credits. i listened when i was supposed to be being a cat lady. i listened because it was riveting and i am addicted to it and i have no self discipline. Try it, but be forewarned…

Season 2 is a waste of time
I started this podcast after watching The Killing Season and really liked season 1. It ended off on a cliffhanger though. The mini episodes were fine although 4+ minutes of ads for 10 or less minutes of content was way too much. The second set of Q and A episodes just seemed to be a way to make content because the questions were all over the place and not very good. He even reads one and says “we’ll that isn’t even a question.” Season 2 finally starts and he apparently decided the thing to do was not tell us what happened at the end of season 1 and actually retread everything from season 1 to start over from scratch. Seriously! He isn’t saying anything new, it’s all of his same opinions from season 1.

    Horrible
Some of the worst journalistic reporting I’ve ever listened to. Any time something of interest comes up? They gloss over it or say oh that’s too horrible to repeat I don’t wanna talk about that. Just talked about the facts of the case! This podcast was incredibly frustrating to listen to.

    New Listener
Started listening in chronological order about a week ago after the LISK suspect was arrested. This is a very detailed and responsible podcast, meaning it truly cares about the facts and the victims not just the sensationalism that can sometimes happen. I highly recommend going back and listening to this podcast from the beginning.* update* this podcast continues to provide all the best and latest information!

    Love it
Great podcast , well put together host is well spoken and the content is interesting and informative. Really enjoying it
  • Clinda0000
    Well done !
I listened non stop ! I especially liked the honesty of those who were interviewed regarding the corruption and ineptness of the police department at that time. I learned a lot. Glad he was captured.
  • kimjdr
    Editing is jumpy
Great research and insight, a note to improve- Some of the areas are poorly edited, jumps back and forward over the same audio. Case in point-Blocked investigation part 2. The audio repeats twice between min 17 and 22. Happens often in other episodes

Not as good as it should be.
This podcast lost me at the point the host podcaster and the journalist do a q&a where both admit they suspect a group of rich men are behind the LISK. That is so outlandishly conspiracy theory that it’s total absurd. Then the three part interview with the attorney where the host asks him to comment on Shannon’s bipolar disorder and drug abuse. An attorney isn’t qualified to answer those questions. A psychologist would be, but not an attorney. This podcast starts out strong but gets sloppy.
  • em-b-robs
    Intriguing!
I’m new to the podcast with no knowledge of LISK. This was done very well and easy to follow. Bonus, I started listening a few weeks ago so it was very satisfying that I didn’t have to wait years before the 3rd season!

Keep your insults to yourself please
Decent review of facts from current investigation. On a side note, the South Shore isn’t at all “weird” in fact some of the richest and most beautiful towns are located on the South Shore. Interesting that the podcaster would insult and generalize an entire shore that he clearly knows nothing about. But just like your opinion, mine doesn’t quite matter either.

    Mary Murphy Episodes
Loved the episodes with Mary Murphy. She shares information from sources she has from her years as an investigative reporter. Hoping they will have her back as more develops.
  • 123_ally
    Referring to the suspect
I believe the host should stop referring to the LISK suspect as “Rex.” It makes the suspect sound like a buddy of the host. I would suggest using just the last name, or the full name. It would sound more professional.
  • Only Sane Floridian
    Just desperate for content.
“Next week on LISK we interview the crossing guard at Rex’s sister’s kid’s school!”

    Victims Matter
Thank you for sharing the humanity of these young women and their lives. Thank you for your part in bringing attention to this story. I have recently heard the phrase “ Survival Sex Workers” and this seems appropriate. Create living wage jobs for women and they won’t have to do this work. Excellent job. Great podcast⭐️
  • idontknowY
    Okay, probably wouldn’t recommend
I’ve listened to a couple episodes, hoping that later episodes are more about the crimes than the victim’s life stories. As someone who was not familiar with the case, I still feel like I’m unfamiliar with the case but I know that the victims were good students, etc. also did not earn the right to have this many ads quality wise

    Started Great but….
I was looking for a podcast to bring all of the details of this case together, and season 1 did just that. But season 2 is a lot of rehashing of season 1. Whole episodes are devoted to repeating exact details of whole episodes from season 1. Hoping season 3 is better….
  • cmclyburn
    Repetitive
From season one all the way to three it’s all repetitive. Down to the interviews it’s the same thing.
