American Elections: Wicked Game

History #169

On February 10th, 1796, Vice President John Adams wrote to his wife Abigail, lamenting the state of discourse in the country. The election was nearing—and becoming heated. Newspapers screamed, factions warred, and John Adams was dismayed with what he called “the wicked Game.”Americans in 2023 can relate. They still have to endure months of shouting, outrage, and the worst sort of political rancor as the country once again chooses its president. But it’s almost always been this way. And to prove it, American Elections: Wicked Game will review the entire history of presidential elections, from the unanimous and inevitable election of George Washington in 1789 to Donald Trump’s surprise electoral victory in 2016—and his contested defeat in 2020.From the host of the American History Tellers and American Scandal, this podcast will explore all 59 presidential elections to discover that there never never was a “good ol’ days,” and that presidential politics has always been played dirty.

Really enjoyed early episodes. Then it goes way left biased
I listened to every one of these. And thoroughly enjoyed the early ones. By the time it got to the 2024 election I started questioning how much fact and how much partisan propaganda was dumped into my ear holes. The part 2 of the 2024 election focused very little on issues. Just like Kamala’s campaign. It demonizes a US president and didn’t even go into how few policies the democratic candidate defined during her campaign. Now I think I will go back and do my own research for earlier elections.

BUT HAVE YOU HEARD THE BIAS ON THE LAST EPISODE

    Embarrassing Final Episode
You could always tell there was a liberal bias to this podcast but it was never egregious enough to keep me from listening, until President Trump entered the picture. The final episode was a 50 minutes of verbal idolatry towards Kamala Harris, with the necessary jabs at Trump inserted regularly. The narrator incorrectly gives Trump a lower electoral total than he had after winning and also makes a remark about a lower popular vote total than 2020. He is also sure to state that the victory had nothing to do with Trump but it was only a repudiation of Biden/Harris (it was both). Add in the required talk about racism and sexism and just when I thought it couldn’t get any more embarrassing we were treated with 45 seconds of how Russia influenced the 2024 election in Trumps favor. The alternate reality that was displayed in this episode mirrored exactly what was spewed by media outlets during this election cycle and what Democrats still don’t understand is this is the reason Donald Trump won.

    Slanted
This is a good historical podcast covering each presidential chronologically . It’s actually really good up until about Nixon and from that point the episodes are increasingly ideologically slanted . The most recent episode covering the 2024 election bordered on unlistenable as it sounded as if it was scripted by the Harris campaign.

More a political opinion podcast than a history podcast.
I’ve listened to all the episodes and very much enjoy how history is presented. However, the most recent episode is so clearly a political opinion episode than objective history that it’s become ridiculous. The cherry picking of facts and telling only the parts of the story that fits the author’s narrative is egregious and should serve as a warning to not take this podcast’s “facts” seriously.

    Excellent until modern times
The first 175-ish years of our presidential history are fascinating and well told. When we get to more modern times - and especially the last decade - I’d like to remind Mr. Graham that both Biden and Harris are already married, so he should lighten up the love fest and maybe turn off MSNBC.

    2024 Episodes
Bias is there but it’s fine, the presentation is excellent. There are definitely changes I would have made to the focus of individual episodes, but on the whole I really enjoyed it. 2024 Part 1 was excellent! I loved to hear the history we all lived through in the same format that the I’ve come to know this podcast for. 2024 Part 2 was disappointing, and it’s probably in this one that I had the biggest problem with the focus. The ending was lackluster compared to other episodes, and too much time was spent on things that weren’t relevant. Perhaps those things would have been relevant had VP Harris won, but she didn’t. That said, it’s surreal to see the cover change. Hard to believe Trump pulled it off again.

    Coulda done much better
This podcast left out so much about both the 2020 and 2024 elections. It seemed slanted toward the Democratic side with subtle descriptions of issues with Biden vs. issues with Trump. Documentary programs should report as many cogent facts as possible and let the listener make the decision. We don’t need a lengthy explanation and justification for why one candidate (Kamala Harris) didn’t win. This last episode with the slanted reporting left me with the impression of how could Trump be so awful and evil yet he won both the popular vote and the electoral college? I think you guys missed the mark on why Trump won and coulda done a much better job reporting it.

    Solid show, couple issues
A little bias here and there, to claim Nixon had a difficult relationship with Ike was just not true. I also strongly contest the framing that he was on the Reagan-right of the party that was described in the 76 episode because he defended Goldwater and manipulated the southern strategy. His idealogical tendencies were far closer to that of Ford, Rockefeller or Eisenhower than Goldwater or Reagan, even if he used rhetoric of the latter. Otherwise I haven’t noticed anything notable. Keep up the good work!
  • The_Tardigrade
    Fascinating
Good history told in a captivating way. The bias is also relatively weak.
  • William Jennings Bryan II
    Its ok.
There are factual inaccuracies, omissions or over simplified explanations. Clear bias against Nixon. To say Ike never trusted Nixon after the Checkers Speech is just plain wrong.
  • mcallfn59
    Missing facts…?
I’d hoped for a critique of how the rich have always used elections to retain the power they granted themselves at the nations creation but it is not here. But a nice “cliff notes” version of the major issues which were prominent during and had impact upon the quadrennial elections. My suspicions of leaving out critical facts was confirmed in the Reagan Carter episode which barely mentioned Reagan’s proven and oft ignored treasonous actions around Iran, the hostages and selling weapons (for his MIC owners) to fund the Contras. Additionally the total lack of his “conversion” from union leader to capitalist right wing tool. Nothing about his time shilling for GE…

    Muah
I have loved this podcast since the first episode, and I still do and I’m going to be blunt to a couple of critics. This podcast is analyzing how people play the game of elections and focuses on elections from a historical point of view and has no political bias what so ever. If you are a staunch believer in the fact that Trump’s tactics are like eggs are falling out of the sky then this podcast isn’t for you and you shouldn’t waste time writing bad reviews without cause. This podcast describes the elections with such vivid imagery that it makes me feel like I’m watching a TV show.

    1972 Election Episode
Really enjoyed this episode as 1972 was the 1st time I could vote. I was in college then. I was also naive enough to think that McGovern would win and the Vietnam war would end if he was elected. That episode brought back many memories. Good job!

    So Close
I was so excited to listen to this. Truly. It was so close to being an awesome podcast - giving perspective on past elections and political history is so valuable and important… but listening to the first episode was a bummer and made me not want to continue. The sensationalized narrative and political bias toward President Trump and those that support him was disappointing. Felt like the same old mainstream media echo chamber.

    Needs Updated
I enjoy the show, but the first episode needs updated taking out incorrect and misleading information regarding Jan 6. For example, no capital police officer died as a result of the incident.

    History GOOD, Current Events BAD!!
I listened to the podcast in its entirety. Hopefully in this rerelease the current events will be corrected for the 2016 election and the 2020 will remain unbiased. Please don’t ruin an otherwise great podcast.
  • istillbelieve82
    Engaging and eye opening
I love history and still have many podcasts to go but so far have learned a lot. All the one star reviews are based off of the last 20 or so years of elections but apparently that’s grounds to *unbiasedly* throw out 200 years of history. The purpose from the start of this podcast is to understand American elections have never been without manipulation, without mud slinging, and as the title says wicked. For those who want to think we live in a time never before seen of political/social crumble and claim the sky is falling, then by all means this podcast isn’t for you.
  • Ajbrantl
    Ignore the fanatics
Excellent podcast. Regarding those one star reviews, I find it interesting that far right people are in this much denial of how unkindly history will see the Trump presidency and his attempted coup.
  • SamPhD
    Such a great podcast!
I look forward to learning something new each week about our nation’s electoral history and love how Lindsay brings each podcast he does to life (I love American Scandal, too). Wicked Game is definitely part of my must-listens each week. Keep up the great work!

    False Statements
Your statements about January 6th 2021 are inaccurate and that is seen in the fact that you don’t play all of Trumps speech and the only person to die on that date was a protestor that was shot by a cop. Most of the other statements can’t be proven until all of the video footage is reviewed by the public. Please stay bipartisan and report the facts. I love this podcast the first time around but would hate to think your views are skewed.
  • A political philosopher
Terribly biased to promote lefties agenda by telling lies
I have listening this since few years ago, earlier episode were more telling history but recent ones has become undoubtedly biased and in fact full of lies of what I have witnessed myself in the recent years.
  • Bob from the Lou
Yo need to correct your prior “errors”
Having now had the bulk of your podcast on Trump vs Biden disproved: Soviet interference “confirmed “ by 50 U S intelligence officials, no wrongdoing by anyone named Biden, Comey is an “honorable man” who would “never leak”, etc. You owe it to history to correct the many, many falsehoods of your prior broadcast. Otherwise, this is worthless.
  • Tbuys42
    Started good
Early episodes were good accounts of historical events but recent episodes repeat proven hoaxes and lies about Republican candidates and whitewash the corruption and extremism of Democrats

Work of Lindsey on sound effects is unparalleled !
Knowledge are golden. I spent years , thousands of hours to learn US history and politics reading and re -reading books . Watching videos . And must to tell it is Sisyphean labor . Especially after 3-4 covids my memory twisted everything into an entangled damaged file . . With help of Lindsey’s podcasts (all of them) i am making an image of what i knew and what learning here into comprehensive awareness of the US. Also cannot stress enough how thoroughly im enjoying all the efforts invested in every sound that appears on background, that many of listeners might not even notice. It is such a tremendous effort to find and pick those than add to the tracks , then toss around and on . Standing ovation!!! Thank you !

    Liberal Wokeness
I listened to all of the episodes and found a liberal biased but when the last four episodes are heard…. Wow! It’s the last four elections with CNN’s commentary and very painful to listen to. I used to like Lindsay Graham but no more. It’s just wokeness fluff and opinion without any historical facts.
  • statedept1515
Well produced but not historically accurate
Specifically the Romney vs Obama episode focuses largely on things that were not part of the campaigns. Donald Trump had no impact on 2012 and the birther movement is from 07-08 and the connection between that and Romney is non-existent. The Clint Eastwood convention speech was also a relatively minor event. They could’ve easily focused on the three Romney Obama debates which were heavyweight fights. Other episodes follow the same pattern in detailing minor or even unrelated events. Just talk about the friggin elections and their issues!!!

    Clear and present bias
From the election of President George Washington to around the 1900’s, the commentary of this podcast is great. But once you get closer to present day the clear left bias becomes more and more prevalent. The last 3 episodes of this series are terrible and absolute trash. This must be why historians keep from weighing in on modern events.

  • 😎🤪😏
    Seriously 😐
I have not listened to anything, but even the name of the Pres. Trump/Biden episode is biased. Why is it named “soul of America”, not “make America great again”? Actually, “soul of America” is a lame and pointless slogan. Why are liberals saying that they trying to save people’s souls? Liberal agenda is proving that they are doing exactly the opposite. Puhleease, America isn’t that stupid. However, “make America great again” is a fact based, intelligent, and honest slogan because that’s what President Trump is doing! Duh.

    Males doing female re-enactments
I love this podcast. The content is great—unbiased and the format is engaging. I love the stories at the beginning and throughout. The only critique is that male voices are used in re-enactments for female historical figures. I’m guessing the same person does all of the voices, but this is cringey and out of touch. Please use females to voice females in re-enactments.

    WOKENESS REVISIONIST HISTORY
I’m currently on episode #28, Bryan vs. McKinley and moving forward. I didn’t want to wait until I am finished to do a review as I suspect that what I have observed will only increase as I move forward. An extraordinary and inordinate amount of time has been relegated to wokeness in so many episodes thus far e.g. poor treatment of Black and Native Americans, Women’s Suffrage, evil business / corporations, pro-unionism . . . . LINDSAY, THIS PODCAST SERIES WAS SUPPOSED TO ABOUT AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS, NOT ABOUT TELLING THE HISTORY WITH 20/20 HINDSIGHT WOKENESS! Very sad but not unexpected!!!

    Illuminating and Fascinating!
One of the best “history channels” I’ve ever had. There are many history-related podcasts but most of them are quite boring so that you couldn’t maintain your passion for too long before you unfollow them. Listening to this one you’ll never fall to sleep!
