Katy’s enthusiasm and deep research on the artists add to her wonderful interviewing style. Absolutely fills in the missing contributions of women artists.

My favorite podcast. Can’t wait for each new episode!
Update: thrilled with the Camille Claudel episode!! I adore Katy Hessel’s infectious enthusiasm and passion for the art and devour every single episode! It’s opened up a whole new world to me of artists I never knew before and even the world of curators and historians, and how we think and talk about art. Love it so much!!! Can’t wait for every new episode! Thank you so much Katy! Your podcast has literally changed my life.

    Life transforming
Thank you, Katy Hessel. You are doing a huge service to the world, talking to and about amazing women artists. You’ve openEd my eyes and expanded my horizons. So much learning to continue to do. So much awe of all these artists.

    Anna Weyant?
It’s all falling apart for me, Katy. I asked a few women artists that I work with if I’m just old and they said no, it’s bad. I don’t want to tear down anyone this interview is rough.

Art history, an hour at a time
How I adore this podcast! I have learned so much about so many wonderful artists. I particularly love hearing directly from the artists themselves, about their process, their inspiration, and getting context for their many wonderful works. Katy’s enthusiasm is infectious, and her reverence for and extensive research about each artist highlighted is so appreciated. I look forward to every episode. I’d like to thank Katy in particular, for the Howardena Pindell episode. I so appreciate that she accommodated Ms. Pindell for the interview, which was fascinating and so important. Our elders are our teachers! Bravo.

Ignored that Anna Weyant dating Gagosian
I wonder how that influenced her career and meteoric rise as a young artist. It seemed dishonest not to address. I listen to learn, not for fawning fan girl interviews.

    A marvelous awakening
As an art lover whose curiosity with art history came a bit later in life, Hessel’s varied outlets of art history hit me at a perfect time—just as I wanted to know so much more, while working past the limitations of patriarchal criticism and history-writing. She shows a commitment to intersectionality in her feminism and an enthusiasm for each of her guests that instantly places them as equals in the white male cannon that has for so long excluded so many of them. In many cases she rightly and confidently places them above the old white dudes. Each episode makes the listener feel as if they’re hearing the shortcomings of art history being corrected in real time—because that’s exactly what’s happening. Listen because it’s highly educational and entertaining, but also because this podcast and all of Katy Hessel’s works are history in the making themselves. Have fun with it!

    So much gratitude!!
I love everything about this podcast! Your voice, enthusiasm, insight, questions, and most of all your guests! The interview with Ruth Ozeki is absolutely blowing my mind and my heart! I want to listen to the entire thing over again and then go back and do so many of the things she talked about. Life can be so much more profound than my usual experience of it. Thank you thank you thank you.

    So well done and interesting!
I have been reading Katy’s book, and discovered her podcast when I looked her up to find out more about the author. I’ve only listened to a couple of her interviews, but so far I find them thought provoking and impressively researched. The interviews have so much info about trail-blazing women, conducted in a conversational way that is engaging. I’m thrilled that, at this point, there are over 100 podcasts, so they are keeping me entertained while I paint in my studio.

Such a great conversation, enjoyable and informative, not only about the artist but about contemporary sculpture as well. Worth a second listen to be sure!

    Tere Arq on Remedio Varos
Loved how this curator did so much homework to understand this artist, including taking classes in taro and the supernatural. Interesting to know that Remedio had very few works as she started her career as a contemporary artist later in life and sold out on her solo exhibitions when she was in her 50’s and then died. An optimistic interview about powerful women artists. Thank you.

    Favorite podcast
Hands down one of my favorite pod casts. It is inspiring and motivating, even if you aren’t a visual artist (which I am). I love the questions, the guests are so informative, well versed, and just genuinely passionate. It’s relatable, non-pretentious, and delightful. I just bought your book, Katie! Thanks for a year of amazing episodes and years of archives I’ve binged while painting and sketching at my desk. I’ve been introduced to so many incredible women artists thanks to you, and my experiences at museums have been forever changed.

I listened while I painted today. Not only do I feel like I learned something, I also felt like I had a cheerleader! Thanks Katy!

    Love this podcast!
My favorite books to read are memoirs or biographies of/by femme artists, so this podcast is perfect for me! I really appreciate the depth & breadth of those featured, as well as Katy’s enthusiasm and lilting laugh! So joyful and deeply joyful. Thank you for celebrating these amazing artists!
  • Ice Cream Brocial
    Saccharine Smiles
The insistence on saccharine smiles and everything being “brilliant” becomes tiresome. It takes away from what would otherwise be great conversations. I’ve noticed guests are not allowed to truly open up because Hessel insists on keeping things light. But art is not only about joy and brilliance. Also, the market matters to artists! Please stop saying “Who cares about the market!”

This is one of the best podcasts about art
I’ve been listening to this podcast for about a year; I found it through The Great Women Artists Instagram account and I couldn’t be more pleased. Katy Hessel asks intelligent questions and really knows her material. Responses elicit a back and forth conversation, not just people answering questions. And no pretension, there is real enjoyment. I know a fair amount about art, but I always learn something. Thanks.
  • tapecase

    A breadth of fresh air
I love this podcast! It’s well-researched and intelligent, a pleasure to listen to, especially while I paint. One of my favorite episodes was the one with Lisa Yuskavage, who comes across as great fun, generous and competent. Can’t recommend it highly enough!

    Wonderful podcast
I just listened to your Lisa Yuskavage podcast and loved it so much! Thank you for making this podcast, for your insight, knowledge and hard work. I wanted something like this all through my undergrad art days in the 1990s and of course there was nothing like this. 🙌🏻💕💕💕

    Ruth Asawa an American Hero
Thank you for so many amazing interviews on Great Women Artists. The first time I saw Asawa’s work was at the David Zwirner gallery in NYC. So shocking that as a New York artist myself, I had previously not known about her work! Thankful for the exposure she is receiving now and your podcast! Insightful and heartfelt. Asawa went through so much, and gave back so much. Bravo!
