DERELICT

1,694

Something has been found at the bottom of Earth's ocean. An ancient artifact that can only be described as a giant door, inset into the sea floor. It becomes known as the Vault. A gigantic enigma, buried and forgotten...nineteen thousand feet down. To study the artifact, the galaxy's most powerful corporation, Maas-Dorian, has built a massive, self-contained, secret laboratory base surrounding it, named FATHOM. It's objective: unlock the secrets of the artifact and discover what it holds. But some mysteries should remain buried. And some doors should never be opened....The story of DERELICT begins with season one, FATHOM, a narrative podcast experience from award winning science fiction author J. Barton Mitchell, and produced by Night Rocket Productions.Website: derelictpodcast.com

    Awesome!
Before listening, wasn’t sure what it would be like. Can now say that it is a great story!

    Wow. Just wow.
Season 1 Single-handedly THE best podcast production I’ve ever heard. Well cast, well written and well balanced. Even if sci-fi isn’t your thing, I could see you enjoying this furious, shape-shifting & dynamic bit of chaos. Looooove it Season 2 Took a dramatic nosedive in production quality. Cast feels a notch lower and it’s a repeat of season one in terms of dramatic suspense - everything is critically life threatening and comes down to the last half a second. Will continue regardless! Voice to sfx volumes are considerably mismatched- an airlock opening blows your ears up while voice is a strain to hear at lowered volume.

Should be picked up as a TV show!
With the exception of some of the better Q code shows, this has the best production value, writing, and acting of any fiction podcast out there. Would love more!

One of the very best podcast dramas I have ever heard
Excellent story and acting. Lots of action, explosions, mayhem, but somehow they make sure you know what is going on at all times. So many podcasts have great sound design but you can’t figure out what is happening to the characters - this podcast makes sure that never happens to listeners.

    Awesome
Great story, great writing, good acting (Agent Blaine rocks) all comes off as professionally done. Worth a listen.

    Phenomenal
This podcast is the absolute best podcast I have ever listened to. Most of the reviews are about sound quality but they must have fixed it because I’ve had no issues. I’m listening to this constantly. 8 hours a day, the creators did a phenomenal job.

    Incredible production value, impactful story
This is the best science fiction podcast I’ve ever discovered. While the story may sound generic if you read about it, the actual way it plays out, the intensity of the performances and the exceptional sound design makes this podcast truly stand out. It gets better and and better as you listen. Just a top notch experience. Well done and thank you!

    Great story, no production schedule
Better just wait for 2030. The second half of season 1 derelict should be posted by then.

    Great story
Very immersive experience and love the characters and story. There's a current project of improving the sound balancing, which is much appreciated and well worth a listen for anyone who struggled like I did previously. Thank you to the production team for listening to all the feedback, I'm so excited to hear what you have in store for us soon!

    My Favorite Sci-Fi podcast!
I was looking for something to get into. I had been let down by some earlier podcasts before but this one was spectacular. I love the twists and turns and the voice acting is great. I appreciate the sound design a lot too. I don’t think it is too loud because I feel it effectively adds intensity to certain scenes. I’m ok when the environmental sounds sometimes compete with dialogue because in the heat of the action everything is going so fast. It is just exciting! I love this podcast, great work guys!
  • Gemgf
    Too loud!
As so many have said, -please- turn down the sound effects. They completely drown out the voices too much of the time. :( Otherwise, this would be 5 Stars.
  • dsharp987
    Sound effects are deafening 🤕
The plot is really intriguing and voice acting is amazing- I want to keep listening but it’ll be at the expense of my hearing! Even with high quality headphones it’s very difficult to hear the dialogue bc the sound effects (incessant beeping of alarms, crashing, etc) drown it out. Thought I could remedy this by following along with the transcript so I can know what’s being said, but the dialogue is so quiet that it can’t even be transcribed! Such a bummer 😭

    Immersive
Great show I binge it once a year waiting for new episodes

    Skipping
In episode 4 at exactly 50min 24sec it skips something and it has nothing to do with my phone. Did you edit something out that was supposed to be in there? Please fix this and the EXTREMELY LOUD sound effects and I will give this 5 stars. This is an AMAZING podcast other than that.

    Entertaining
I find this podcast entertaining and enjoyable. I think it is well made and produced too.

    Love it
Love it!! Only thing is the volume control but it amazing

    Mindblowingly Good
I didn’t even know podcasts could BE this good. Every time I’m listening to this I find my eyes unfocusing while I visualize the scene. I’ll just stop in the middle of vacuuming the floor and stand still, listening. Cannot confirm the same will happen to you, but the fantastic plot, suspense, and acting should be universal. Must listen.
  • Takamurasan7
    Almost Perfect
Great stories and twists. I easily am immersed with what’s happening… until loud sound effects drown out everything the characters are saying and I lose what’s happening. I shouldn’t have to go back and read the transcripts to know what was said. Everything else is amazing and pulls you in. If they can tone down the crashes during dialogues, it’s be 5 stars.

    Obsessed!
Engrossing. Once you start you can’t stop.

    Great story!
I love this story so much!! The voice actors are amazing. It’s hard to find stories like this to listen to with such well written and well performed dialogue. Only one thing is I might be too old and have crappy speakers to fully enjoy it though. The noise of the action, effects and music make that superb dialogue hard to understand. The downside to movie soundtrack production podcasts is no closed captions. HahahHaha! *sigh* I wish I could adjust the dialogue louder or bring it to the front more because I know I’ve missed stuff - and I hate that because it’s such a good podcast.

    Huh? What did she say?
Team Derelict knocked it out of the park, but then tripped on the way to home plate. It’s a great story but I suffered through the first season with the hopes that they would have overcome their audio challenges by S2. Alas, season two is just as hard to understand the dialogue in as S1. The acting is great, the story is very good, really everything rocks except for the SUPER LOUD audio effects that drown out half of the dialogue in every episode. I really want to know how S2 ends, but after four episodes, I couldn’t take it anymore. I honestly think I had the volume up so loud to understand the words that I was harming my hearing. Derelict Team. Please re-mix the audio and let us all know when you have. I will happily return and give you 5 stars.
  • NobodyX7
    Compelling
Bold and interesting sci-fi story with horror elements. Beeping sound effects can be irritating though. Can’t wait for the rest of season 2.
  • SoffyBoot
    Best of the best!
Wow! By episode 2 I was addicted! Amazing acting, script and the sound effects rival Star Wars! Awards for everyone!
  • Trixer00
    Great story but the beeping
Honestly the constant beeping in episode 4 made me so sick. It’s so annoying. I had to completely close out the story which is sad cause it was a good story up to that point. Ive lost the entire plot and the entire series now is completely unlistenable. Its a shame too! Whose idea was it to put a constant annoying high pitched beeping every 3 seconds on repeat for over 10 minutes? Did you not listen to this yourself after you made it?
  • Jeff-c
Great podcast and generally great production
The story and acting was great and production really good, I just wish they had played with the sound leveling more. In a lot of the action sequences the sound effects are way to loud relative to the voices, so when you turn down the volume you can’t hear the voices clearly.
  • PapaDTay
    Could be better
You WAAYYYYYY overused the “bloody tears” phrase, it just became annoying. And come on Riddick as killian 🤣 Also the sound mixing for headphones could be better, whenever Angel is having a withdrawal her sex breathing just makes you wanna skip through a bunch of it. Kinda got hard to follow imo.

loved this podcast, was the first fiction listen i heard and i’ve been hooked since!!!
  • hiipepper
    AMAZING! But…
I’ve followed this immersive podcast since FATHOM. In fact, I’ve listened to Fathom more than once. Fathom sound mixing is bearable until you get to the very end of the series, but Derelict is just awful! The sound effects are so loud and it feels like it’s 200% volumes up every tension they’re in and racing to solve it making it SO HARD to hear the dialogue…😵‍💫 I will change my Star to Rate once the sound mixing is fixed and come back to re-listening it, because I just can’t enjoy it at all with all these loud sound effects.

    Great LISTEN
Engaging, pulls you in, with awesome sound support. Can’t wait for season 2!!!

Good writing and VA, baffling sound mixing
I really want to like this podcast, but it’s almost unlistenable due to the sound mixing. Dialogue is soft, while the sound effects are blaringly loud. It’s incredibly jarring, and a lot of the time it’s difficult to know what’s going on because the dialogue is drowned out by explosions or whatever. It was an issue in the first season, particularly towards the end, but it’s REALLY bad in season 2 If they rebalance the audio, I’ll change my rating, but as it stands I can’t stand to listen to it. Which is a shame, because the writing and the voice actors are superb (from what I can hear).

    The Imax of Audio Dramas
One of the few shows iv chosen to donate to. Listen to this in the dark and you completely immerse yourself in story.

    Incredible show
I don’t think there’s any issue with sound mix. This is an A+ quality show, better than most on TV or on the big screen

    4.2 Stars
This is a different kind of review from what I usually do. Books are my main focus, but there are a few immersive podcasts that deserve attention — Fathom being one of them. I don’t often listen to immersive podcasts because, to be frank, the vast majority of them are lackluster in story, acting, sound design, or all of the above to the degree that it makes it very difficult for me to listen to an entire episode. Fathom stands out from that crowd with high production quality, good voice acting, and an engaging story that had me listening to episodes back to back. It also has excellent ambient sound that does a great job of selling the deep ocean atmosphere. For those of you who have never listened to an immersive podcast, they’re basically audiobooks on steroids. Sound effects from the world around the characters provide a textured environment, allowing you to exist inside that space despite not being able to see it. When done correctly, the soundscape tells the story as much as the characters do. Fathom is a sci-fi set in a black site facility in the darkest depths of the ocean where an impenetrable alien vault has been discovered anchored nineteen thousand feet below the surface. In the pitch black of the deep sea, a signal the vault emits slowly drives two of the scientists working on unlocking its secrets to insanity. Meanwhile, the resident AI, Mack, begins to show signs of malfunction, causing simple failures like being unable to pinpoint members of the crew, or serious miscalculations like misreading pressurization in the hydroponics bay. After chaos erupts with a scientist detonating a bomb on site, an agent from The Company — Agent Blayne — is sent to evaluate the situation, but once he arrives, he can’t be allowed to leave and report back. The vault’s contents have found a weak link that will open its prison, and it will kill anyone who tries to intervene. Fathom is like if you stuck the ring-worlds from Halo into the ocean as it resonates with the same flavor of action, horror, and tragedy. It’s relatively short with 10 episodes, each one about an hour in length. Derelict, its sequel, is currently in production with the first few episodes available to listen to.

    First season yay; second nay
First season was enjoyable. Give it 4 to 5 stars. Second season I give two stars. It is extremely difficult to follow. a lot of times over written by all the sound effects. Very difficult to keep track of what is going on with who.
  • mattshults
    Disappointing
I can’t believe I’ve waited four years only to find out this is all some guy’s Chronicles of Riddick fanfic. As soon as Riddick - I mean Killian - was introduced, I realized what this has really been all this time. This is a classic example of a long walk for a short drink of water.
  • Lythium99
    Just wow!
Exceptional writing, direction, acting, sounds design - excellent everything, really. I am so involved with these characters and this world. And the second season does not disappoint.
  • Rocktruck82
To much focus on loud noise .
The first season was far better because there was more focus on story then over the top loud noise but the second season was all loud noise and little actual story it just comes across like your playing one of those games where every minute there is a push button action scene just gets annoying and you have to constantly turn down the sound really wish they had kept the same production as the first season so 2 star for me.
  • Bigkozy
    Great
Great story but tone down the music a bit. It’s hard to hear over it.
  • Ranger John
    Insane production values!
Acting; sound effects, pacing -- all superb! I am hooked!
  • BassoonMuscle
    Too noisy
The premise of the story is interesting, and the voice acting is very good. I wanted to like this. But the sound design is so busy and noisy that it’s impossible to understand the dialogue for long stretches of time. Listening in the car is impossible, and listening with headphones yields an only slightly more intelligible experience.
  • John pate14
Me sad can’t listen no more
Episodes are required for me -1 star
