Plane Crash Diaries

46

I'm a pilot obsessed with flying and all things aviation. This podcast series covers more than a century of commercial aviation and how its shaped the world. Aviation is now safer than its ever been, but it took one hundred years of learning and often through accidents and incidents to reduce the risk of flying.

In the midst of so much mediocrity, a fantastic find
I recently found “Plane Crash Diaries” on Audible & have had to fight the urge to binge every single one. Every single episode has been fascinating & Desmond has a lovely voice. There are other aviation podcasts but this is the best I’ve found.

    Great Podcast, Excellent subject matter
Desmond does a great job on this podcast and his narratives are excellent. The timeline is also very good, less than 30 minutes per episode. If you are interested in aviation safety, download this podcast.

    Strkes a good balance
I enjoy and dread these episodes in equal measure, being a nervous flyer who is fascinated by flight. The presenter strikes a very good balance between serving up the drama of a particular incident, explaining the technical and/or human failings, and re-assuring the listener that the airline industry has made improvements to help ensure the problem or problems don't re-occur—at least as easily. I would certainly enjoy longer episodes on some events, but I'm not taking any stars off for that.

    Most Entertaining Storyteller
The narrator is by far one of the best storytellers. The material is fascinating and it’s delivered with wit and humor.

    One of my favorites!
So professional, gives amazing explanations that someone who knows nothing about this stuff can actually follow, and always answers my question before I’ve even had a chance to fully think it!

    CVR vs FDR
The CVR Records audio information; the flight data recorder (FDR) records sensor information there is a difference they are not the same.

    Very Pro-Western/Pro Imperialist Spin
In Ep 13 breezes past details about Iran Air Flight 655 like the nationalities of those on board and that 66 were children. Omits completely that the US shot it down intentionally, including how H.W. gloated about it and said that he’d “never apologize.” Chocks it all up to “oh well” and then moves on to absolutely rip apart the Iranian military for Ukraine Flight 752, including a patronizing faux sadness tone at the 13 children who lost their lives. No surprise he often cites known neocon regime change rag “Bellingcat” as a source. Treating all air disasters equally and respectfully would do this podcast well but as it stands it’s simply a man with extremely conservative politics injecting those politics into the air disasters he covers.

Informative even for someone not in aviation
I found Des Latham through his Anglo-Boer War podcast and decided to give this one a try. It is engaging, well constructed, and accessible even for those not in aviation (like me). Highly recommend!

I suggest you listen to flightsafetydetectives.com and get your facts straight. They detail the Lion Air crash.

    Informative and interesting!
One can easily imagine how a thorough history of aviation disaster and the lessons learned by the industry through such misfortune could make a wonderful learning tool for potential new pilots, but this podcast is an informative, easy-to-listen-to, well recorded little gem even for those who know nothing or next to nothing about aviation. If you’re like me and simply love finding out the details of how the world around you works through interesting stories and getting the insider scoop of under-appreciated industries, then this is the podcast for you. Desmond Latham is professional and entertaining, presenting thoroughly researched information in a concise and interesting way with a charming South African accent to go along with it. If aviation and commercial aviation safety history is of any interest to you, or you’ve ever simply found yourself curious about how planes work (and, occasionally, fail to work) then you will definitely enjoy giving this podcast a listen!
