How To #245

This isn’t a podcast for total beginners. We’re going to assume that you know what plot structure is, what a protagonist is, where ideas come from, and how to use a semicolon. This is a podcast for people who can already write okay, but want to do better.

The key is “want to do better”
This podcast is more about being a better artist. One who has compassion, passion, and wants to present their unique vision. This podcast examines trends in genre art and discusses how the artist makes a difference and can improve the world.

    I have a love/hate relationship w/ this podcast but that’s why I give it 5 stars
This podcast always makes me think even if I don’t always agree. My biggest gripe is I wish they would talk as deeply about the things they love as the do the things they hate.

    It’s good guys
I’m also a fan of Raquel’s Everyone is Beautiful piece for Blood Knife but found the podcast through people yelling at her for being right. It’s particularly worth your time if you find yourself worn down by commercialized geek culture and the genre (and/or) publishing scenes; I definitely am, but if you collect Funko pops you might feel affronted. Sorry. No punches are pulled here. Content-wise, the guests are great and the insight into process is valuable. Discussion does tend to circle the same two or three topics a lot, so you might get worn out trying to binge it unless you’re personally angry at the Marvel nerds or Cassandra Clares of the world (which is fair). Personally, I’m pacing it out a bit. Writing this review to hopefully even out the one-star bomb. This is a good podcast made by people who care a lot about craft. If that also describes you, give it a try.

If you can get through the intellectual status anxiety, a good casual cast.

    So glad I found this!
I discovered this after reading Raquel’s piece on sexlessness in contemporary blockbusters. The show is a perfect balance between thoughtful insight and casual venting between writers in conversation.

    Fascinating discussion!
I’ve only listened to one episode and am excited to hear more!

Challenging + Subversive Takes for Serious Writers
The 1 star review brigade that R. S. Benedict has received for daring to suggest fanfics aren’t serious training or necessarily healthy communities for budding writers should be a clear indication of the level of maturity of the show’s detractors. The guests and discussions about writing and culture on this show are thought-provoking and substantive rather than just commercial and affirming. If you’re serious about making good art the topics and perspectives here are absolutely worth your time!

    Fanfiction is bad

Is this performance art? A parody of MFA snobbery?
If this is a send-up of the myopic, gatekeeping, pretentiousness currently infesting MFAdom, it’s brilliant; if this is an actual how-to-write-better podcast then...big yikes. A more self-important yet clueless host one could not hope to find.

    Fun, Funny, & Informative
This is a great podcast for people who are pretty serious about writing as a craft. It’s maybe not the best podcast for total beginners; it’s is definitely geared more towards people who at least have a good working understanding of writing fiction, but I think this is a positive since it means the topics are more varied and in-depth and it’s not the same type of info you could just find with a google search. The host and guests are very well-read and knowledgeable and it’s really refreshing to listen to people who genuinely care about writing fiction as a unique art form when so much writing advice out there is kinda cynical and business-y.

A rare gem in a sea of lukewarm takes
Rite Gud is best described as a series of honest, nuanced discussions between people who understand media very well, and I'm delighted to have found it. I've been very online my whole life, so I'm familiar with (and exhausted by) the usual Discourse. I'm glad to see someone who isn't parroting the same three MCU takes but also isn't out to be controversial or cruel. Well done.

    MFA drek
I listened to two episodes (and could barely stomach those). The topic on toxic fandom was interesting, but the host and guest mainly sounded annoyed that people read and enjoy writing that they don't approve of. For what sounds like a relatively erudite podcast, there's a stunning level of self-awareness here. The podcast exhibited almost every flaw it critiqued.
