Old John HallAnnoying HostItโs ironic that Chris Nuttall-Smith hosts a podcast about food & dining cuz this little twerp is exactly the kind of smarmy know-it-all guaranteed to ruin any dinner party. ๐คฎ

BschoraBlank Slate Dec 2017Oh! TOFU? Nothing said about Roundup-Ready SoyBeans? Wow. Plant soybeans, soybeans grow, weeds grow... they spray the entire crop with Roundup, the soybeans start to die, the weeds die... then MAGICALLY, the soybeans bounce back and grow. And THAT is what we eat. GMO Soybeans. Millions of acres around the globe. The fallout is extensive. ORGANIC soybeans MIGHT be ok โ Monsanto has poisoned the earth. Soybeans. People. Livestock. Itโs a wonder, are there are any soybeans left on the planet that are not impacted? Morally Righteous? Hahaha... sob.

Dangerosa1980If Alton Brown and Radiolab had a baby...The host and editors should be proud of this podcast, the host asks the right questions, the additional sounds only help the listener to immerse themselves into the subject. Itโs as if Alton brown and Radiolab has a baby.

AppReviewNick1Deep Dives into the Everyday Wonders of the Food SystemThis is a fascinating program. Each episode takes some perfectly ordinary-seeming item in the produce aisle or the grocery store, and unveils the complex story behind it โ a story you wouldn't have thought even existed. These go well beyond the random-seeming sequence of historical events that often characterize "A Biography of X" and "XโA History Book" treatments you might have read or heard, revealing just how we wound up with the agrofood marvels that we now all take to be the basic palette of our diets. The episode "Green Gold" is the most remarkable so far, unveiling the remarkable century-long history of the people, technologies, and food cultures behind the everyday miracle that is year-round packaged salads. The story of taste, technology, and marketing run amuck behind the overwhelming dominance of "white meat" over dark in chicken and poultry is a similar series of over-the-top surprises. The one episode that I would say is not up to this high standard is "You'll Have Another," the story of tastemakers in the spirits industry. It had the weakestl sourcing, featured the fewest surprises and complexity, and exhibited an uncomfortable comfort with the smarmy low-level corruption that it lays bare โ itself a revelation of interest and social value, if seemingly unrecognized (and certainly underemphasized) by host Nuttal-Smith. Well worth an hour or so for each episode.

JDamian007Nerdy and funI love this podcastโs enthusiastic and enlightening stories about food.
-
robertchen1992Great informative podcastI absolutely love this podcast, it's got a great balance of science, economics, history, and culture -- all told in a to-the-point manner without uneeded fluff!
-
phxtrainsome good, some not soThe episode on chewing gum was really interesting (lots of different angles, like gum behindiron curtain). I find the episodes with chefs a bit dull. Sometimes the sound effects and msuic make it hard for me to hear the talking (especially the tilipia episode). It's almost as if the producer is thinking this is borning, let's put some sound effects in to try to make it interesting but it's like trying to put ketchup on a boring donut. Doesn't work.
-
Emily_K-B15Orbitz - Not the GumThis was so interesting. I love Chris' voice and his approach to this episode. As a nineties kids - this episode gave me all kinds of feels!
-
TreebyleafGreat storytellingWho would have guessed that stories about gum, pork and yeast would keep me on the edge of my seat? I hope this podcast lasts for years to come โ truly top-notch.
-
NenobAbsolutely delicious! The fridge light team has me more engaged (and hungry) than usual! Keep it up :)
-
cheena baterboniaVery entertaining and informativeNeeded something like a sort of โpalate cleanserโ for podcast after weeks of listening to true crime stuff. Stumbled across this show and listened to their episode about yeasts and was hooked. Itโs a fun, entertaining show about everything in our fridge (food and drinks). Keep up the good work!

szaydelGives me more reasons to love food and food culutreThere is a world of food and things that lead to food which most of us know nothing about. This program is attempting to change that. And so far so good!
-
Land of Lincoln ListenerWell Done!I love this podcast. It has everything: food, food production, agriculture, science, history, business and marketing, health and more and more and more! The production is perfect. Congratulations on one of the very best podcasts (and I listen to hours of podcasts) I've ever heard.

John YorglesI love this podcast! The CBC has finally done it. They've produced a great podcast. The Fridge Light answers great, simple questions about food in every way imaginable -- with expertise, chef stories, personal anecdotes, lessons from history, economic analysis, cultural anthropology, etc., etc., etc. It's sound-rich and imaginitve and intelligent, and it's totally, 100% Canadian. If you are at all curious, you'll like it. If you care at all about food, you'll love it. I've been waiting a long time for a podcast like this from the CBC -- amazing work!
-
princess_gmoA new favoriteWhat a fun approach to food history, news, and science! I'm two episodes in and I'm already hooked. Also - nickname may explain my bias but I'm really pleased with the way they handled the Impossible Burger story in the yeasts episode. It's so easy to sensationalize and fear GMOs with absolutely no evidence. But they're so cool and can do so much for us. Can't wait to listen to more!
-
SarcartGreat!Really interesting and very well done. Kee them coming!
-
LmariekozelVery interesting so farEnjoyed learning why chicken thighs are so much cheaper at grocery ๐

JessCTxScience meets The Joy of CookingJust 2 episodes in and Iโm hooked. Please make more episodes! I love the way that the past is explained and connected to what we do now. I feel like I learned some things about food that I didnโt know were lost.
