Music #16

Disgraceland is the award-winning music podcast hosted by Jake Brennan that explores the alleged true crime antics and criminal connections of musicians we love like Jerry Lee Lewis, the Rolling Stones, Taylor Swift, David Bowie, Cardi B, the Grateful Dead, Amy Winehouse, Bob Marley, and more. Disgraceland is a scripted, single voice narrative storytelling podcast that melds true crime, music history, mystery, and misadventure. Disgraceland is not a journalistic podcast. It is an entertainment podcast inspired by true events. Certain dialogue and scenes are sometimes fictionalized for dramatic purposes as they are in most scripted entertainment based on true events. Sources and credits for each episode are available at disgracelandpod.com. Full scripted episodes are released every Tuesday. Bonus “After Party” episodes are released every Thursday. Disgraceland is available wherever you get your podcasts.

    Jake Brennan talks too much.
Stop the bonus episodes. You're smothering our feeds. It's way too much.

Drop the needle on some new episodes.
Just subbed a month because I love your style of podcasts. Now it seems your just sponging the money with nothing new. Buyers beware.

    Almost great
Great idea for a podcast. Great stories and well written. The dramatic and affected voice is annoying and unnecessary.

    Manson episodes
Very off putting conclusions drawn about Charles Manson’s music. Going to tread carefully around a mind capable of that sort of thinking. Will listen other episodes based on subject matter. Jake is a hack journalist though. That’s clear.

    His voice
Great topics, but manic delivery with a gravelly voice ruins it for me.

    Disappointed Disco
I’ve been listening since season 1. Was one of my favorite podcasts. Now it’s all rewinds and after party episodes. The best new episodes are now behind a pay wall.

    No new content
It feels lazy to just keep putting out “rewinds”. If there isn’t new content, stop spamming us. I was a fan of all the Double Elvis shows so all the “rewinds” are exhausting

    Haters gonna hate? 🤣
Jake is so talented and his story telling skills are off the charts. Not many people can tell stories the way Jake does. To put the icing on the cake, these are stories about legends. Just because he tells a story about a legend you don't like you're gonna hate? lOL. As Jake reminds us, hard genre lines are for the 80's (thanks for that lil tidbit Jake). Jake has his own unhinged appreciation for all kinds of unhinged genius and for that I appreciate him. Listen for good storytelling while also learning something new-maybe add new legends to your own roster of wild genius to admire.

    What happened?
What happened to this podcast? Who cares about Kobe or this dumb assassin story? Where’s the real stories about the music?

    April Fools Day John Denver
OMG the whole thing was so plausible I was wowing holding my breath a few times. I played John Denver songs when I was a child, our school choir one of his songs on local television !! Haha After halfway through, I thought this is definitely a conspiracy theory No way. You fooled me all the way to the end. 😂

    Host is hard to hear
The content of this podcast is awesome… if you can hear it. For some bizarre reason, the host whispers much of the show.
  • hellbillylarry
Gets the surface level stuff covered.
It’s a well produced pod. And the guy is really talented. But the podcast is basically a summary of the Wikipedia page. Kind of annoying, but I keep listening regardless. Anyway check out Cocaine and Rhinestones if this is too basic for you.

One of the best pods, but can’t afford a sub
Truly one of the best podcasts! You want compelling stories, journalistic research, fantastically narrated? Look no further! You stay here and listen. Go back and listen to every single one, but my financial situation isn’t built like that right now. We all do what we got to do. I figured ads would support the show, but that’s how life flows. Was really looking forward to so many more episodes.

    Excited to listen to more!
I found you from your Anthony Bourdain episode. I loved him, looked up to him. and thought of him, who he was, and how he lived almost as a superhero for those that shared and lived in an “all in” way- as I too share(d) some of his worst habits. When he died, there was a specific type of hope that also died in me, and I’m sure in many of his beloved, long-term fans, friends, and family; it was the hope that he (and therefore someone like him) could overcome such a judged past, not by shunning it, but by embracing the good and bad and honesty in it- publicly. To many people, Tony’s past may appear to be marred, but regardless, he did not let it build boundaries to limit how successful he and Lis life could become. Tony seemed to play the antihero, who did not ask for the position, and yet still rose to the occasion. My heart remains broken for his daughter and Ottavia, my heart remains broken for the Anthony Bourdain that he himself (and all of us lost), long before his physical death- as you were correct in pointing out. I don’t know how to make sense of the end period of his life, I cannot turn it into a lesson or fable; but I do see it as a warning: that life has an immeasurable amount of choices, and that ultimately it takes all kinds of people to keep time unfolding. Bourdain remained true to himself, until he no longer could- and sadly I don’t think anyone knows why it came to that. I don’t know if he could ever realize the amount of people he touched, and his humility reminded us all that he was in fact, always just a human. The quotes

    Now I’m Hooked
I listened to a few and initially was not that into it. I give it another try and now I’m hooked. Jake does lots of research and is a compelling narrator Rick

    Love it!
Agree with other reviewers that this is the BEST… hugely entertaining. I’ve been binging this podcast and Badlands ever since I came across Jake Brennan on another podcast. The writing and delivery are so good! Keep up the great work Mr. Brennan!!

    Great podcast
This is my first time writing a review. I’ve listened to crime podcast for years. I have found some ti be really good. However, your podcast excites me. When we finish one we can’t wait to hear the next. The way you tell the story is amazing. The way you narrate is on point. Keep up the good work.

    Amazing
Heard an ad for this podcast, and started binging it right away. Good storytelling, nice voice, loving the personal opinions added as well, just enough, keeps the story going. I just finished the Norwegian death metal one, OOF, that one was mind blowing. Can’t wait to hear the rest. Loving it!

    One of the best
Super engaging, music is great and it’ll take you right into the time period the person lived in. Jake is a great storyteller who is engaging in his narration and I always find myself wanting to know more about the stories he tells which keeps me engaged even further.

    The music in the background
Should never be as loud as or louder than the speaker’s.

    Fabulous podcast
The stories themselves are incredible (most of which I’d never heard of), but Jake’s storytelling is very engaging and intriguing. An excellent listen, highly recommended!

    It’s like….
Listening to this show is like having that white friend whose dad is in the music business and he has all these amazing stories to tell. So everyday after school you do homework at his house just to hear more of these stories 😂😂

    This WAS a good show
What happened to this show? It started out good and turned more about hip hop music.

    Ugh
Can this guy shut up about Morgan Wallen for five minutes? He’s no Taylor Swift and never will be. He’s a hack.

    Enjoying this a lot
Anymore I enjoy podcasts as much, if not more, than streaming TV (though currently, The Righteous Gemstones is so good I'm actually watching it week by week). One of my favorite podcasts is Disgraceland. As a long-time music nerd, I appreciate the research that goes into each episode. Jake B. is a most excellent host/narrator, and the (well-produced) dramatic hue of the show keeps me riveted all the way to the end.
  • crystal29
    Hmm
Just started listening. I love these stories but wish the narrator would stop interjecting his personal opinions on music as fact. A lot of the comments site him as annoying but don’t give specific feedback so that he can adjust his narrative. You may not personally like an artist but that doesn’t make them “trash” or “cheesy” If you got past your own ego and cleaned up your narrative to exclude how you personally feel about certain artists, or at least stop presenting them as factual statements, I would give you a higher rating. I can tell that a lot of hard work and passion go into this podcast.🤷‍♀️
  • bsidepoetry
    Again with the sloppy research
Maybe I’m just more aware of it now from recent Badlands bloops, but again the host’s research has gotten so sloppy. In the little Kim episode he refers to Foxy Brown’s album as “Lil NaNa” - it’s Ill Nana. Google is free or perhaps stop covering people and things you don’t know or care enough to put respect on their names and work.
  • auntieviral
    Annoying and entertaining
The host’s style of narration can be pretty annoying but still an entertaining show
  • Blackwater24
    Outstanding
I’m not really a huge music fan exactly. I mostly listen to talk radio and podcasts. This is an excellent show regardless of whether you’re a fan of the topic person or not. It’s very well done and every episode is riveting. Don’t miss it.
