Yeah No, I’m Not OK

381

Growing up, I was taught to say that I was “ok” when I really wasn’t. Mental health just wasn’t something that anyone in my family or community talked about or even had access to. Yet pretty much everyone was affected by it.

Today, young people of color are disproportionately affected by mental health issues and are not getting the resources they need, and I want to change that.

And this is why this podcast exists.

Yeah No, I’m Not Ok, my new podcast made in collaboration with LAist Studios, is here to open up the conversation about mental health. Every week we will explore issues that youth face all over the world (addiction, depression, anxiety, suicide, radical self love, and much much more) through conversations with friends, colleagues, activists, artists and health care professionals, all people who have gone through something life-changing and are now healing from it.

We want to start a mental health revolution. A movement that can start by talking about how we feel. One where we’re not ashamed of our own human experience.

What will feel like simple conversations among friends will really become a complex narrative of what is happening right now, especially to young people of color. With a real and emotional sound and few easy answers, Yeah No, I’m Not Ok will hopefully become a critical show in a critical time, a place for you to bring your complicated feelings and spend time with people who are rooting for you.

    A very REAL conversation
I’ve only listened to the first episode so far but the experience was one of vulnerability. Real people existing where they are at in life and taking on some hard questions. It’s so brave to tackle personal issues in therapy and then to reach out to maybe plant the seed of healing in your brother. I’m looking forward to listening more. Thanks for sharing with us!

It’s like a harm hug that tells you “it’s ok”
First of all, this podcast is so soothing. I love the quality of the audio, and the amazing questions you ask your guests that are thought provoking. What an eye-opening, encouraging and beautiful podcast this is. If I could describe it as a metaphor, it really is a warm hug. An “it’s ok” in these crazy, hard-to-navigate times. I struggle with anxiety and depression and a family history of issues, yet listening to it feels like a breath of fresh air to be able to relate to the topics talked about in this podcast. It makes me feel less alone. I look forward to this podcast, and it’s my favorite one of all (and I love podcasts). I am so happy I found it. Thank you for making it, D. It’s a selfless gift to all of us!

    Listener stories
I appreciate Diana’s vulnerability and openness. I think it’s very brave to open up and use her platform to share listeners stories. It resonates with so many people and the fact that she takes accountability when she knows something wasn’t said or done correctly and does her best to fix it and be a better person is amazing. We can learn so much from Diana. I’ve always admired her bravery especially when I read her book, but this podcast shines a light on exactly how beautiful she is inside as much as she is outside. Truly a genuinely wonderful soul. Xoxo

I'm surprised this doesn't have more reviews
I was surprised at how vulnerable Diane gets and even though she's not perfect, her desire to learn and grow is inspiring.

    She get’s deep.
She’s not fooling around. This is looking in the dark corners of your mind and struggles. And especially her mind! Her transparency and loving inclusivity on this topic. The fact that she interviews her brother shows how authentic and sincere this podcast is. This is so needed right now. I love you, Diane. Thank you, Queen.

    Not for the close-minded
I enjoyed the few episodes that time has allowed me in my week. I think this is an excellent podcast of story-telling, vulnerability, and is for those with an open-mind and/or who can relate to the experiences being shared or for those who truly want to learn/hear various unique experiences. I think that non-white voices need to be heard and I learn so much more from those who can share personal experiences. I want to praise Diane for allowing something so personal be the first episode of the show. It’s bold, it’s raw, it shows the positives and negatives of having a conversation about mental health with family members who go decades without talking/identifying these issues. Thank you!

    New Listener
I’m looking forward to hearing all the current episodes. I am hoping mental health and mental illness and the middle aged & elderly are discussed. Older people are often the most isolated and neglected population in America. Don’t forget them.

Mental health as a brown woman
Just listened the first episode and Diane and Eddie had me crying the whole time. I could relate with many of the stories that were told. Living my early years in Colombia was hard, not understanding what was going on through my head and coping with unhealthy behaviors that I’m just starting to understand now. Thank you for showing us the real world, that we are all susceptible to mental health issues, and create awareness.

    My new favorite Podcast
It’s clear that Diane brings her light & love to everything she does from acting to activism & everything in between. This Podcast is no exception. It’s so refreshing to hear her and her guests speak so authentically about the importance of liberating mental health. They also share about their lives and how we can all come together to dismantle the systems in place that harm us & instead build a new world that really cares about us all. Please support this Podcast & share it far & wide because we aren’t always ok & that’s ok & sharing stories like this is so special & helps us learn & connect. Thank you, Diane!

About episode 1 Let me explain
Diane and her brothers conversation was so good. Her brother is very wise and he is aware of so many things. This conversation educated me and helped me to understand how our mind works. We grow up in different countries and different circumstances and dealing with different issues but I relate to his feelings and Dianes feelings so much. Thank you so much for sharing.

Exactly the conversations we need today
This podcast is amazing — feels weird to call it “a breath of fresh air” because they deal with some really challenging topics, but it is humorous and honest, rather than feeling academic or dark.

    Love the story lines!
I love the story line about your story, and how hard it was to live without your parents during such a difficult age. I love how pure and sincere your story was and about your brothers struggles. You should definitely bring more awareness about children of deported parents. For some people it’s easy to leave it behind but not everyone can and speaking about it can definitely help you heal. So bring more awareness to this problem, would be wonderful!

    Yes Please
This show is sooo soothing and real. It makes me feel ok to be authentic and real. To exist in my body as is. To love myself for myself. Yes, please.

    Thank you!
Absolutely love this podcast! Knowing the feeling of having someone you love deported and this country not caring how it effects the kids. And to know that it’s okay to say I’m not okay. Thank Diane you’re a huge inspiration

    Long Overdue
As a Colombian American with parents who don’t subscribe to the idea and importance of mental health and hold strong cultural norms, I find this podcast not only timely but speaks a lot to my lived experience. The candid conversations add value to the podcast and bring the topic to the forefront. Much needed conversations. Thank you.

    Such an important podcast
Mental Health is a subject near and dear to me. Diane is so genuine and her conversations with her guests are so real. And normalizing the thought that it’s ok not to be ok is so important. The exciting thing is that it’s still early but I can already tell this one is special. There’s a lot of podcasts out there that aim to entertain. I truly believe this one can change the world.

    Fantastic show
Diane Guerrero’s identity didn’t even occur to me until I listened to the third episode. I didn’t and don’t get celebrity vibes from this show. It’s honest and raw and beautiful without a veneer of artifice. I highly recommend this show for anyone who’s experienced the intersection of mental health concerns, identity issues, drug addiction, and / or familial trauma. This show is dope and goes deep.

    This show is a favorite!
As the title suggests. Big fan of both Diane and Eric so there’s that but I love any opportunity to find out how people in entertainment are dealing with their mental health. This is awesome!

    Repeats
The content was great, but there was a commercial interruption which caught a thought midway, and when the podcast returned, it was a repeat of everything from the beginning. Otherwise, loved Diane in Doom Patrol and Dash in Evil. I am looking forward to see her "In The Heights". I grew up in Inwood on the other side of the Cloisters, but had friends and adventures in the Heights. Too much of "beauty" standards has to do with some kind of Greco-Roman, Euro-American ideal created by men and for the "male gaze". Glad you ladies have the freedom to express your ideas on this.

    Hooked after 1 episode
I heard the trailer on Red Table Talk and knew I needed to hear more. Love how real and raw you are when talking about the topics you’ve addressed so far. Especially episode 3 when talking about body image from two different ends of the spectrum of beauty standards in America.

    Eleventy Billion Stars
I thought it was just going to be sad. But it’s mind blowing. It’s like the first time I ever saw a cuss word in a maya angelou poem and then I knew maybe I could do that too.

    Beauty of Sharing Experiences
There is a beauty of sharing experiences that shows vulnerability, bravery, and healing. It’s great show to start de-stigmatize and navigate how a person’s life is impacted by a system that needs transformation.

Great concept, not so great execution
I liked the concept and premise, and the host seems authentic. However, the feeling of professional journalism goes away every time she goes into a F-bomb tirade which happens multiple times in the first episode. I get she’s down to earth and is passionate about her journey to redemption but if this is meant to be professional investigative journalism, the F-bomb tirades need to stop because it cheapens the material and makes it seem amateur.

This podcast is exactly what I was looking for
So many things in just the first two episodes that I heavily resonated with and validated so many things I experienced growing up as a child of two immigrant parents from Mexico. Thank you for sharing your story!!

Omg this made me cry you and your brother are so strong. Thank you for doing this.

    Not what I expected
5 minutes left into the first episode I could not finish it. It sounded like the host was talking down on her brother and was not really engaging with him in conversation about his mental health struggle.

    Normalize Mental Health!
