So... You're Canadian with Dave Hill

41

Dave Hill isn't from Canada. But his grandfather Clarence Vincent Blake, Sr. was, and he wouldn't shut up about it. Still, Dave wondered: what do we even really know about Canadians? So every Tuesday, Dave attempts to get to know our neighbors to the north - one Canadian at a time. And yeah, of course he talks about curling. This podcast is seriously Canadian. And it's not sorry about it.Artwork by Danny Hellman.

    Rare 5 Star
I don’t know why I love this so much. But there is something so fun about this podcast. I’m American from New England, With family who immigrated from Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. This was many generations before me but it’s fun to think of “my history”. Dave’s dry humor is endearing and his dog in the background makes me smile. That’s Dave. Your voice is adorable too.

    Intrigued by the premis
I find the concept funny - learning about Canada one Canadian at a time. I enjoyed the first episode, mainly because it introduced me to Letterkenny, which I’ve now watched. Some episodes have been more interesting than others. I hope it continues to improve. My only major criticism is that the sound quality isn’t very good. For example interviewing over Skype isn’t, in my opinion, the best sounding. Also, background dog noises are distracting. Don’t get me wrong, I love dogs (I have a dog) but not as podcast background noise.

    Awful and dull
I am Canadian, I was excited. It is very disappointing. The host does not direct the conversation to any insightful or interesting topics. By the second episode he is repeating his same dull anecdotes another Canada. A) Quebec City is so cold! He thought he’d have to cut his face off! B) His girlfriend observed Canadian guys don’t seem like dicks. Just saved you listening to two episodes of middle aged English speaking men talk about how Toronto is diverse, with no further exploration of what that means. Here’s a idea: talk about something that is surprising or interesting about Canada. Jean Chrétien strangled a guy on camera. Louis riel, or Alberta separatism. Newfoundland. Maybe talk to a woman or someone who speaks French. Or a draft dodger. A podcast about “Canadians are nice and it’s cold” is not going to last long.

    Thank you!
What a fun podcast! As a Canadian living in the US, this podcast is a good fix. Premiering with Malcolm Gladwell was a fine hook. The second episode from Trevor from Letterkenny was a terrific follow-up. It’s funny you asked him about L A. Have you seen the Letterkenny skit on L A ? Awesome! Merci beaucoup!

Knocking it out of the (Canadian) park
I’m sold. Starting with Malcolm Gladwell was especially fantastic because I got to listen to two of my favorite voices (literally and figuratively) have a delightful conversation while I cleaned out my closet. Can’t wait to hear more! Does anyone need staples 3x5 cards?

    Hilarious!
The current population of Canada is 37 million, which means they could make 37 million episodes, and I hope they do!

As a Canadian in New York...
This dive in to Canadians and the first episode specifically makes me smile. Thanks Dave for taking the time to get to know us!

    great idea!
I have a lot of romantic ideas about Canada. I often dream of running away there to marry into a family that makes maple syrup and always has health insurance! I can’t think of anyone better to teach me about the real Canada than the super intelligent and sensual comedian Dave Hill! (I hope Guy Branum is a correspondent!)
