James Bonding

TV & Film #156

Matt Gourley and Matt Mira love James Bond so much they decided to make a podcast about it. Each episode they invite a guest to dive deep into one movie from the greatest film franchise known to man. The entire James Bonding catalogue is now being re-released for free, one week at a time, starting 10/5/22. We never left.

    Dates
I love the show. Been listening since 2014. So glad the old episodes are back up. It would be awesome if there was a way to change the releases back to the original dates so they go back in order with the newer episodes.

    Decent show
I like the show for the most part, but quite frankly, Mira says “Quite frankly…” A LOT and isn’t as funny as he thinks. Yeah, stellar Ralph Nader joke in the draft ep lol… Also, Gourley has fallen off since the Conan gig and having a kid, imo. It’s obvious his priorities are elsewhere. I hate it when you can tell the hosts are just doing it for money or posterity bc they’ve been at it for a while already. Between hearing about his band and the renovations of his LA home, I’m sick of him basically half the time. The other times he has some great observations about Bond’s little quirks or cliches. Hey, where else are you going to get James Bond podcasting with some notable guests?

    Matts, Matts Matts!
Having another go through with a 30-day Stitcher Trial as they continue to be released onto free platforms. The negative comments re: them not taking the films seriously enough are misguided because almost all of them have ridiculous elements and “The Chris Farley Show” would become tiresome pretty quickly. You can tell they love everything Bond, ultimately. They buy the extraneous stuff, go on Bond related holidays and whatnot, so they’re fans, to the bone. Really like the guests, with Amanda and Maria being standouts (Ghost Ghirls is terrific), but most of them get the comedic angle being strived for, and of course not everything is going to land, but the overall ratio is right there to make it really worthwhile, even if behind the paywall. I’d love some uhh, more commentaries, but looks as though they’ve moved on for good bar the odd appearance here and there. For those looking for commentaries Blank Check’s Patreon side did every Roger Moore film, and they’re a treat. One minor quibble: when they’re syncing the commentaries they do the pause after the first roar, but instead of counting down right away they’ll ramble on for awhile and one is stuck waiting for them to get on with it and can’t fast forward because will indubitably miss the second cue.

    Come back!
This is my all time favorite podcast. The tone, the comedy, the rapport between the Matts and great guests. Favorite episode has to be with Tom Lennon. And the one with Greg Proops and the gang. I know Gorley is now doing the Conan needs a friend but come on guys. Come back and do other spy franchises-Matt Helm, In Like Flint etc.

The Podcast I was Looking for!
I love this podcast. James Bond has always been one of my favorite franchises, either to see the “advanced technology” through the eras, the actors involved in the movies or (especially even) the music. The background information you guys provide has been fascinating. I already was thoroughly entertained by Matt Gourley’s quips from listening to Conan Needs a Friend, so this podcast was like the best of both worlds! Keep up the good work guys! Bring back the girls who thrashed Goldfinger; I really enjoyed their female insights. Matthew Morse Also, when you guys gonna review no time to die?

Like A Warm Blanket, Sipping Hot Chocolate.
I’ve listened to this show since the beginning. I’ve done repeat listens more than I like to count. I will revisit it every once in a while and it feels like getting together with my old friends. My old Q branch. The best M ever. Sipping on some bourbon with Dame Judy Drenched behind some quilted leather doors, awaiting Mr. Ian Fleming to pop up out of nowhere (conveniently while Gourley is taking a PPK break). I subbed to Stitcher Premium for this and How Did This Get Made (ps- shout out to the boys for turning me on to THAT gem). And I don’t mind paying for my entertainment, I’m just bummed I don’t get to listen to them on my runs as Stitcher has yet to release a Watch app, and I’m on cellular AW. A man can dream. If you’re a comedy AND James Bond fan I highly suggest going over to Stitcher and listening to the full run. It is worth it. James Bonding will return…hopefully soon.

    Wrong show reviewed
I did a review on with gourley and rust instead of this show by accident. Go ahead and check out their show too. This show is awesome if you’re a 007 fan. They talk everything Bond and they know their stuff and have a great rapport.

    The best
This is one of the best podcasts that exist. They better put back out everything at some point. Also can we get an ad by Ian and Cubby?
  • Steveskyrm
    Love this podcast!
Having grown up with Bond films, I am thoroughly enjoying Matt & Matt discuss the movies. Even though I have a soft spot for Thunderball. :)

Best bond pod out there. Just some buds James bonding together.

    Uuugh
Tried coming back to this show after a long hiatus - and unfortunately it seems the things that grate on my nerves still continue to do so. Mira, specifically, is the absolute worst. constantly dropping reminders that he’s wearing head-to-toe Bond junk or that he and his wife are trying to get pregnant, while pretending he’s more knowledgeable about 007 than Gourley. Gourley, either too gentile or shy seems all to happy to let Mira drive most episodes. Great theme song though.

    Hi where’s Andy ?

    Time Warp Ping Pong
Pretty fun podcast for the most part, but I can never figure out if a "new" podcast is actually new -- it just seems like they are playing reruns from several years ago all the time -- would be nice if they included the date that the show actually first aired in the show notes. The way it is set up now is kind of cognitive dissonance and not exactly "truth in advertising." Also I'm not a big fan of "two people talking and making each other laugh" podcasts in general — I think it should be a law that all podcasts have to have at least one guest per episode, otherwise the smug "verbal ping pong" act gets a little precious and/or obnoxious after awhile.

“Good people on both sides” works as an argument if you ignore the rest of the quote. Nice cherry picking. You can do better. Or maybe you can’t.

    All Time Low
Really? Rating Another Way to Die over Goldeneye on the day we lost Tina Turner? Sacrilege! Another Way to Die is cacophony of migraine inducing sounds & lyrics which should be dead list on any song list, not just Bond themes. License to podcast should be revoked.

Two heterosexual white men talk about a topic that just goes right over their heads
Right over their heads, like they are on the ground and the important parts are the ISS. If you want to tackle the same material but with a group of less often represented people, check out “Kill James Bond” where they do the same but have insightful analysis instead of gleeful circlejerking.
  • cletus5000
    Ali and Georgia whiplash
Cannot stand these two ladies, I do appreciate the Matt’s choice to bring them back for the clicks, but even over 10 years later, they still sound unabashedly cranky non fans with an agenda.
  • tcwiii
    Improv comedy first, Bond last
As with most of the pop culture podcasts in circulation, this is primarily an improv comedy-addled “bits” show, with very little to offer folks who genuinely love Bond films. Woefully light on structure and historical context, with significantly less contagious energy towards the movies themselves than towards the hosts’ own jokes, and little to no illustration of why the hosts find Bond compelling other than as a venue for mockery and doing funny voices. Might work as a comedy podcast if that’s your thing. Earnest James Bond fans will likely find this show insufferable.

Most fun Bond Podcast out there!
This podcast returning will definitely help curb my Bond appetite until the next era of the franchise arrives. Thanks for re-uploading this, Matt and Matt - revisiting the series with you guys is a blast! Also - you’re too hard on yourselves. You’re unquestionably lovers AND experts. Grant

Great not perfect because of one episode.
Don’t listen to Gold Finger episode 5! But please listen to the rest of the episodes! Great job on both of the guys and women! Drinks to a Pigeon triple take!

    Best Podcast. Period.
The title says it all. Best Podcast that I have ever listened to. You can tell they love the subject and that they are naturally funny. A true must listen for Bond fans and comedy fans.

    The Passage of Time!
When I first listened to this podcast, I was a sophomore in High School. Now I’ve graduated from college and I’m working as a writer. How does time move that fast? Good podcast, by the way.

    No more paywall!!
Looking forward to relistening all over again!! Love the show!!

    Let’s bond again.
I am far more giddy than anticipated to find that the episodes are being released from behind the pay wall. Loving to hear the back catalogue of Matt and Matt again.
  • Indi Fan
Fantastic show, please do Indy next
Have been following the show since it’s inception 10 years ago. My relationship with bond from ages 18-28 has changed and it’s been fun following along with the Matts’ own growth as bond fans the last decade. Love their passion. Now please do Indiana Jonesing ASAP.

    Put the episodes back up!
Put the episodes back up for the fans. If you guys aren’t putting up patron content why deprive true fans of resisting enjoyment?
  • Susanrhill
Always entertaining, but please pay attention
I love this podcast, but boys—you often talk about “plot holes” in these movies, but you clearly just weren’t paying attention! It’s frustrating to listen to in the NTTD episode!

    What?
2 beta males discussing a fictional alpha male. This is peak podcasting in 2021
  • Mojotronica
I was hoping you'd return for No Time To Die
...And you did! For whatever reason the conversations between Matt and Matt hit that sweet spot for me, and I laugh more listening to this podcast than any other. And it's good to be able to laugh again. It's niche subject matter, but the personalities are what have kept me listening all these episodes.

    The World Is Not Enough
I listen to this pod even though I have only seen a few of the movies. That is how good it is.

Love the Approach to Bond Fandom
Fandom is weird, right? It's not as simple as it seems, not just 100% blind support. Fandom, at its core, should mix a healthy bit of skepticism and understanding of changing worldview with the typical of breathless adulation. Not everybody would agree with that, but it's one of the reasons I love James Bonding. In addition to enjoying Matt Mira and Matt Gourley, whose podcast resume fills up my feed anyway, this podcast shows that it's possible to love something so much that you realize it likely has a few blemishes, scars and misogynistic attributes that haven't aged well. I applaud their willingness to bring in guests of all stripes - from people who clearly love the franchise to people who have never seen a single Bond movie to, well, their friends - because it honestly helps to find new things to talk about after you've seen Octopussy a dozen times. I was lucky to finally find this podcast at the very end of the original run and have enjoyed the pair's attempts to make the podcast seem fresh, from the fantasy drafts to the ranking episodes to the episode that discussed what a third Dalton movie would have looked like. And, in all honesty, I love that the frequency of episodes is unpredictable because it keeps things fresh. And again, you can only talk about Octopussy so many times.

Stitcher premium-the worst villain James Bond has faced
Stitcher premium-the worst villain James Bond has faced. Good podcast but services like stitcher changing the free nature of podcasts is evil

    Where are you guys?
Matt and Matt, with the news that No Time To Die has just been delayed till november you should release a new episode soon.

    This is my favorite
This is my favorite podcast. I’m happy it exists
  • Mr. Loiter
    Is it over?
There hasn't been a new episode in 5 months despite a lot of Bond news and updates in the media. If it's over that's fine, I get it, there are only so many hours in the day. But the fair thing to do is make an announcement one way or the other and not leave listeners hanging. Even Blofeld would say something.

    We're lovers not experts
Thoroughly enjoy the back-and-forth comedy and Bonding between these Bond lovers not experts.

    Thank You
I just wanted to say thanks for helping to ignite my love of James Bond. I grew up with Brosnan and Craig, but after listening to the podcast I went back and started watching the originals. I’ve recently finished them all and can’t wait to start over again. This podcast is so funny and is perfect for anyone who loves Bond. The recent drafts are a blast to listen to as are the commentaries. Keep up the great work!
  • Theelborn
    Love!
I love hanging out with Matt and Matt while they talk about our boy James Bond. There are few podcasts where I’ll listen to a 2+ hour episode, but for these guys I will. And even then I’ll be like are we done already?! #OctopussyStrong #PreTitleStrong #KnickKnackTobasco

    Bonded in espionage.
Love this podcast. So many things missed while watching. Love taking notes and listening.

    Great James Bond Content!
This is one of the most, if not the very most, professionally-made podcasts about the world of James Bond. The Matts have great chemistry and interesting insights.
  • GJR816
    “I’m Ruby, baby!”
The Matts have the best 007 podcast in a crowded field. Fun and funny, with great guests and always insight. Love the Casino Royale (1967) show, the ranking of the Bond posters, and the two Bond drafts, among others. Every show is a gem.
  • Seandreazy
    Should call it a day
Early episodes are a lot of fun. The boys run out of steam about halfway through season 1 and maybe sooner for season 2. Matt Gorley ( not sure about the spelling and don’t care to learn) is the kind of man you want to punch in the face repeatedly. Mira’s not to far off.
  • philipmacf
    Still peaking
Loved this podcast since the start, but this bond draft is a top 5 episode for me across all podcasts.
  • Reformed Baptist
    Holy Crap!
This is fantastic! I miss hearing your new episodes.

    Listen to Matt’s other casts
Coming from “Star Trek: the Next Conversation,” I was shocked at how bad this podcast is. The other Matt seems lie he’s ready for a nap most times.

    From Brooklyn With Love
I could honestly just listen to these two talk even if it wasn't about James Bond. I discoverd this pcast through The Nerdist and love listening to it. Not only does it provide interesting insight into the world of James Bond, it's also very funny and a great way to spend my morning commute.
